Chapter 1- Leave Me Alone
I sat next to my brother at breakfast for once, something I never wanted to do; my mother had taken my seat that morning and no one argued with mom.
My brother’s gray eyes glinted with happiness this morning and, like usual, his reddish brown hair wasn’t brushed and messy.
“Hey, sis,” he smirked, ruffling my hair.
“Jack! Knock it off!” I screamed, I had just done my hair!
“Jack say sorry and Drew don’t yell at your brother,” my mom said plainly, entering the conversation as she continued to drink her coffee. My mom looked lovely with auburn hair and stunning green eyes, Jack and I looked identical to her which was a blessing.
“Sorry, sis,” he smirked and winked at me.
“Gosh, Jack!” I gave up and quickly ate my eggs.
I ran up the stairs to redo my hair, I looked in the mirror. My reflection never looked right to me anymore, I just couldn’t be happy with myself. It all started when I started dating my boyfriend, Mike, at the time I didn’t know how I felt about Mike, he just
asked me out and I said “ok.” Now I’ve just grown into the relationship.
“Drew! I’m driving today,” Jack yelled from downstairs.
“Why do you have to drive today?” I yelled back as I used a hair tie to secure my braid.
“Cause you always drive and I’m older than you!” He yelled back as he came back upstairs.
“Only by a few minutes,” I shot back.
“I’m still older,” he said knocking on my door.
“Come in already, I’m sick of yelling,” I said, swiftly opening the door.
“Of course you are... “ his voice trailed off, “So how’s Marrisa doing? You haven’t talked to her since… forever.” He moved to sit on my bed.
“I don’t know.” Marrisa was my best friend since kindergarten, but since I started dating Mike we haven’t hung out, one because she doesn’t like Mike and two because I’ve been so busy with him I kinda forgot about her.
“So just to get this straight, you abandoned your best friend for some snotty boyfriend?” My brother raised an eyebrow.
“He’s not snotty!” I defended, brushing my hair rougher than before.
“Yeah, he is,” Jack groaned, “He’s such a jerk. How do you believe him over me when I say he’s cheating on you?”
“Is that what this is all about?” I looked in the mirror again, admiring my lovely smooth skin, reddish brown hair, and gray eyes.
“Partially, I also miss Marrisa,” his voice got so quiet I could hardly hear it. His face was so red it could’ve made a tomato jealous.
“Aw, does someone have a crush,” I ruffled his hair like he did to mine this morning.
“No…” he slapped my hand away and left the room. I knew my brother was just trying to help me out and as much as I loved having that kind of conversation, despite the teasing, I knew Mike could never lie to me.
I finished my hair, packed my bags, and finally made it downstairs.
“Finally,” Jack said from the couch.
“Whatever, let’s go,” I sashayed out the door and to the car, slamming the car door behind me. Jack got in after me, slightly irritated, I couldn't tell why though.
My brother and I used to be so close, same with his best friend, Hunter, and Marrisa. We were the closest people in the world. I mean sure me and Hunter got in arguments all the time, we could still trust each other with everything. Like I said earlier about Marrisa, that all ended when Mike came along.
Before I realized it, we made it to the school, Jack and I made our separate ways. I looked over in Jack’s direction once I made it to Mike and saw that Jack was with Hunter. I hadn’t talked to Hunter in ages, it kinda hurts not talking to the people who cared about me the most.
Hunter had dark brown hair, amazing blue eyes, was really tall and lean, and had the cutest habit of acting like a five year-old in a non-annoying way.
“Hey, Drew,” Mike said, weighing his heavy arm on my shoulders. I glimpsed up at him, admiring his cliche blue eyes and blonde hair. Mike had the average football player look that reminded me of movies I used to hate.
“Hey, Mike,” I said, staring back in my brother and Hunter’s direction.
“What are you staring at?” he snapped at me, causing me to jump.
“Oh, just my brother and his dweeb friend,” I smiled at Mike, “Don’t worry about it.”He hesitated, “Fine. Also Monica is looking for you.” He wasn’t looking at me but I didn’t care as much as he did.
“Okay, bye,” I pushed off his heavy arm and ran over to find my… best friend?
“Hey, girl,” Monica came up behind me, finding me before I got to find her. Monica was pretty but not beautiful like Marrisa was, Monica has dark red hair, probably dyed, blue eyes and was a decent height but really skinny.
“Hey, Mike told me to find you,” I smiled at her. Monica was someone I could consider my best friend but she was a bit too loud and obnoxious for me.
She suddenly looked uncomfortable, “Um, yeah… I wanted to know if you wanted to go to the school baseball game with me tonight, Tony bailed on me to hang with Mike.”
“Yeah, sure,” I said, “I was gonna go anyway ‘cause Jack and one of my old friends plays baseball.” I wasn’t too sure who Tony was but I decided it would be better for me to act like I did know.
“Who’s Jack?” she said wiggling her eyebrows.
“I’m with Mike remember,” I rolled my eyes, “Jack’s my brother.”
“Well you know it doesn’t hurt to meet new people,” Monica smiled but at the same time looked hurt.
“What are you talking about? It’s never okay to ‘meet new people’,” My eyes
widened. This was another reason I wasn’t too into hanging out with Monica, she just has to make every conversation weird and awkward.
“Well Mi-” she shook her head, “No, nevermind. So how are you and Mike doing?”
“Honestly, Monica, I love spending my time with him. He can be really sweet
sometimes,” I said dreamily. Mike was every girl’s dream, he was just so handsome.
“Oh,” she looked really nervous, “Well, that’s great for you.”
“Thanks,” I smiled and, desperate to leave the conversation, hurried off to my next class.
