Chapter 1
The first day of school is always dreadful. It was the first day of my senior year and it was my first day in this school. My parents moved across the state and of course, dragged me with them.
I walked through the doors and made my way to my locker. I got a few stares from some people, but no one tried to talk to me, which I was okay with. I opened my locker and looked inside. I put my jacket inside and then looked at my schedule again. I had to find Mr. Jones’ room for homeroom.
I closed my locker and turned around. Room number 536 was right across the hall. After letting out a sigh of relief, I walked over and into the room. There wasn’t anyone in there but there were papers sitting on each desk. I glanced at the names on each paper, but I couldn’t find my name.
“Can I help you,” a loud voice asked behind me.
I turned around and stared at the man. He had dark brown hair that was gelled up and black glasses framed his eyes. His jawline was chiseled and his biceps, huge. “This is the room that is on my schedule,” I stated.
“Did you look for your name?”
“It’s not here,” I answered.
“Oh you’re Sophia Johnson,” he smiled. “You’re new so you have to come with me to orientation. I am also assistant principal and I am in charge of all of the new kids.”
“Oh okay. When is this,” I asked.
“It’s during homeroom. There will be an announcement.” He grabbed an empty chair and pulled it beside his desk. “You can sit here until they bring in another desk.”
I sat down in the chair and more kids started flowing in and taking their seats. I just pulled out my phone and scrolled through my newsfeed. The bell soon rang and the day officially started.
Mr. Jones stood up in the front of the room and announced, “I am Mr. Jones and I will be your homeroom teacher for this year. I also teach AP World History and psychology, so I might have a few of you in class.” I quickly glanced down at my schedule and realized that I had his class which made me feel a little better. I also noticed that I had a study hall in his room right after my history class and then psychology with him after that. At least it was at the end of the day and not right after homeroom. “I am also assistant principal so I will be in and out throughout homeroom and possibly some of the day. I will be leaving during our free period to introduce the new people to the school. The bell should be ringing shortly.” He sat down beside me and gave me a little grin as he did.
I smiled back and then asked, “Are there any other history teachers in this school?”
He chuckled and then answered, “Yes, of course. Why?”
“I seem to have your homeroom, your AP World History, your study hall, and your psychology.” I told him.
“Well, I guess you’re just lucky.” He smirked and then the bell rang. He stood up and said, “I will be leaving now. A sub will be here in a few minutes. Sophia, you can follow me.” He took a step towards the door and I followed him.
We walked down the hall and to the gym. As we were walking, he asked, “So, where are you from?”
“Norwich, it’s on the opposite side of the state.” I said to him.
“Oh yeah, I know where that is. My parents used to live over that way. I think in Preston? I’m not really sure. It was way before I was born.” He explained.
“That’s cool. I lived there my whole life and then for some reason we moved out here. I swear my parents just got bored.” I told him.
“Well, Danbury is glad to have you.” He smiled and then opened the door to the gym. I walked through and he followed. There were kids sitting in the bleachers, waiting for Mr. Jones. I joined them as he walked into the middle of the gym.
“Hello everyone and welcome to Danbury High school. You all are here, in the gym, because you guys are new. Will be giving you guys papers and showing you the map of the school.” Mr. Jones said to the new kids. There weren’t that many people. Maybe 10 or so. I felt like Mr. Jones gave me little glances here and there. It didn’t bother me, but it didn’t make me feel 100% comfortable.
After orientation was over, we went back to homeroom and then to first period. I travelled to engineering and was surrounded by the dirty, gross, mean looking guys. I got a lot of looks. I sat in a seat and ignored the glares.
The teacher walked in and saw me sitting there. “The cosmetology room is down the hall a little more.” He said as he sat at his desk.
“I’m where I’m supposed to be.” I smirked.
A guy walked in and all the other guys cheered for him. I looked over towards the door and realized that it was Max, my ex boyfriend. He greeted his friends and then saw me. His smile fell and he froze.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
“My parents moved.” I answered.
“Who is this girl?” A guy asked Max.
“Sophia Johnson.” Max answered, with a smile.
The room got quiet because they knew now who I was and what happened between Max and I. The guy who asked who I was then asked, “Dude, isn’t she supposed to be paralyzed?”
Max glared at him and then sat beside me. “Can you walk?” He asked me.
“Yeah, I can. I’m almost back to normal.” I said to him. I looked around at our audience which included the teacher.
“I’m glad. I’m glad you’re okay.” He smiled.
“Me too.” I smiled.
“Do you race still?” He asked me.
“No, I had to give it up. It’s not good for me at all.” I told him.
“That’s a shame. You were really good at it. You beat me tons of times.” He chuckled.
“Well, now you can have your shot at winning.” I smirked.
“So why did you move out here?” He asked.
“I needed to get away from all of that, but I guess I just can’t.” I said to him.
“I can show you around my track if you want, after school or something.” He offered.
“I’m good. I have to get home and help unpack.” I said to him.
The teacher stepped in and told us all to take our seats. We sat down and started class. It was great to see Max, but it brought back all of the horrible memories I had with him; the race, the crash, losing the thing I love most.
Later that day, I headed back to Mr. Jones’ room and all I could think about was Max and what he did to me. I sat down in the class as Mr. Jones walked in. I guess I looked upset because he asked, “Are you okay?”
I nodded and avoided eye contact with him. “I’m fine.” The late bell rang and no one else came in. “Am I the only one in this class?”
“Yeah, I thought it was pretty weird. I guess no one wanted my class this year. I’m not really sure.” He explained.
I nodded as he handed me the syllabus for the class. The period went pretty quickly since he just told me what the class was going to be like. I just scrolled through my email for the rest of the time.
The rest of the day went well. I didn’t see or have any classes with Max which was good. After school, I went home and changed my clothes for physical therapy.
My mom came home around 5 and made us dinner. My dad was still at work since he was a neurosurgeon. “Hey honey, what do you want for dinner?” She asked.
“I’m not really hungry.” I told her.
“Are you feeling alright? Does your head hurt, your back?” She asked me as she felt my forehead.
“I’m fine.” I smiled. “Just not hungry.” I couldn’t tell her about Max. She thought I never got my memory back. No one did.
“Okay well, let’s get going. We are going to be late.” She smiled and we walked to the car.
I went to physical therapy and I felt great. I felt stronger than I ever was before. My doctor, Doctor Matthews, was very proud of my success and she even took me out for coffee afterwards. She was a friend to me rather than a doctor. I knew her already since she used to work at the hospital with my dad.
That night, I did my homework and just continued to think about the crash and today over and over again until I fell asleep. It was like a never ending nightmare.
