Does it matter who we are?

This is our story to tell all the future generations what we suffered for you to be in this place, where there were lies and promises that they never kept.

They taught us to read, to write and pray, but they never told us it will stay that way.

Taught us all the white man’s ways, to build our community in their image.

We were acting like whites, but yet feeling black.

We grew up with pain and fears instead of growing up with love and peace.

Said this is the best way - to keep the children away.

Said don't worry dear parents, we’ll give them what you can't give

Will teach them how to live, teach them how to serve others, teach them how to build themselves, but they humiliated them instead.

They took our children away from us, breaking mother’s hearts apart, tears filled their eyes.

They didn't give a damn about a father who came running, fighting mad with tears falling down, cause they knew that was their last time to see their children.

All the promises they made were a process of destroying our identity, in silence, without warning.

Trusting the society was a mistake, where our culture was taken away, our women were raped, our children were separated from us just to serve the society and our man were hunted and murdered. Why? Is it because of who we are?

We were denied the right to learn, to love, to live by our own rules, to feel the freedom and to be alive.

Families lost their children and the children themselves lost their identity. Racism was part of their process where we were treated differently because of who we are and where we came from?

The pain we suffered in residential school were deep and unforgettable.

The issues we had in reservation was an everyday life.

Does it matter who we are?

Cause everything in this world was a matter of time .

What we faced is not who we are, we are strong hearted and strong together.

One hand can make a difference so don't be afraid to be proud of your existence.
