Chapter 1

Everything was on fire. Slowly the smoke rose as I began recalling my life. I had only lived fourteen years. This wasn’t far. How could I, Nicolas Evens, die here? This was not impossible. I could find a way to put the fire out. I didn’t have to be afraid. I thought to myself. I’m a demigod!

Focusing my attention towards the flames, I calmly took a deep breath. With a simple word, the flames began to die, and then in a blaze the entire fire died completely. Gasping, I relaxed.

Turning around, I looked at Adam, “This was close. You should be careful with your powers.” I advised.

“Sorry about that.” He murmured self-conscious. Adam was never the kind of person to say much, which wasn’t new to me. I had tons of experience with all types of people, heck I live in a valley with thousands of kids, you’re bound to run into a few personalities that are introverted.

But, Adam was cool. He had the dirty blonde skater hair and the blue eyes of Apollo, that apparently all the girls seemed to love back at campus.

“Don’t sweat it, but assuming you look like him, I’m sure you’ll figure out who your father is.” I replied. Taking a turn I began to walk down street. “Let’s go, it’s a long walk from here to Long Island.”

“Wait, what do you mean my father?” Adam asked softly. His voice was almost mute, something I wasn’t used to. “Did you know him? Is he anything like me?”

“Physically yes, but personality wise no. He’s very extroverted. Ya’ know loud, flashy and loves cheesy poem, preferably haiku. Although they make no sense. Free style is the way to go.”

“OK?” Adam murmured. “So, where exactly are we going?”

Smiling, I stopped. “The thing about that is, we’re going somewhere you’ll be safe. I’ve been there for nearly two years now, and it’s amazing. I prefer going out to find others like you and me and bringing them there in one piece, although there are times when I do get them there in two.” I glanced at him with a mischievous smile.

“What?! That’s awful!” Adam implied.

patting him on the shoulder, I smiled. “I’m joking, relax. Smile a little, it’ll make this transition a lot easier on you. Besides when you get settled into your new life, the smiles will have to be implied. This life is hard, like, a bag of bricks kind of hard.”

“Alright,” Adam tried out a smile and felt a bit more nervous.

Shaking my head, I sighed. “Let’s move, we’ve got like three hour until we get there.”

After about an hour and a half, we arrived at an forest off the boundaries of Long Island. I was glad that we had made such distance from the school, but considering that Adam wasn’t that physically adapt, we needed to take a break soon.

With the snap of a twig underfoot, I held my arm out before Adam. “Wait.” I said quickly. Crouching down to examine the trap, I noticed a swarm of monsters. Closing my eyes, I massaged the bridge of my nose with great irritation.

“What is it?” Adam asked.

“We’re surrounded.” I rose to my feet. Pulling out my celestial bronze blade, I glared at the tree that surrounded our path. “Come on out! Ogres! I know you’re here, so come out!”

On cue, a band of eight Ogres came out from the trees, four on each side. Understanding that Adam didn’t mean to burn down the school, I wondered what would happen if he did it intentionally.

“Adam. Do you know how to activate your pyrokinesis?” I asked.

Glancing at his hands, he concentrated, and a small flame erupted to life in both of his palms. “Yea, I can do it. What is it you need me to do?”

“You take the four on the left. I’ll take the four on the right.” conveyed as I walked forward. Charging in, I slashed right through the gut of an Ogre. In a walling of cries, the remaining three charged at me. Side stepping their attacks, I kept focus on the one he had injured.

It was better to kill off the weakest link first, but if I were to follow that logic, I would’ve killed them all in one strike. Gazing at the wounded Ogre, I smiled. “Moretes.” I whispered and in a sudden plague of dark aura the ogre died. Turning my attention to the remaining three, I smiled as I sheathed my sword.

“Ogres? Forgive me, for you have sinned.” I sighed. “Tres si mueres.” I smiled and in the bat of an eye I walked away to notice an explosion of dark aura.

When I caught up with Adam, he was standing in front of a crisp circle. He didn’t say a word but he did learn how to control his power enough to contain it.

“Four down.” He smirked.

“Alright, let’s move, we’ve got another hour and a half.” I said as we walked deeper into the forest.
