I
IT WAS PEACEFUL. The isolation, up there on the rooftop where the air smelled of salt to heal my wounds and all I could see were the stars, twinkling in all their glory. I shifted my head to look over at him. His hair was messily sprawled aсross the roof shingles, eyelashes fluttering in the sea breeze. His lips curved upwards into a smile as his gaze caught mine. And so we lay, stargazing in each other's eyes.
"Does it ever get lonely up here?"
He gazed up at the sky, smiling his lopsided smile.
"Life is always lonely, but the moon keeps me company."
He was beautiful. I just wish I had kept a souvenir for when my memories eroded and my world began to crumble. He may have been beautiful, but even the prettiest rose would wither with time.
I watched him rise and fall. Just like the sun, his chest would rise and fall. He would rise and then he would trip, always catching himself only to get up, over and over like a broken cassette.
"You won't miss me where I'm going."
"I'll always miss you, but my pride will never allow me to. Chase me and I might just let you in."
