FIREFLY
Sometimes I feel like a firefly.
Carefree, wild....set apart from all other creatures of the night.
My bright light defeats the surrounding darkness and I feel powerful.
Every night I blend in seamlessly watching the flickering street lights, city lights and of course the stars.
It makes me feel like I’m not alone on this earth. I feel the warmth of the night... The moonlight seeps through my skin and I know that I’m blessed.
But ... To be a firefly at day...
I can assure you nothing feels more lonely and hopeless.
You become invisible under the beautiful rays of sunshine.
I swear...if you don’t look close enough you’d think I was never here.
It’s funny how my magnificence is stripped away and I am once again all alone Barely noticeable in a room full of people.
That’s why I am forced to believe that even mother nature kinda...sorta loves me for she only allows me to shine in the presence of her darkness
My favorite line in this poem is "the moonlight seeps through my skin and I know I'm blessed." I get that this is a free verse poem, but it would have much more weight with a different form!
