My Letter To The Past

My name is Ethan Moore, the society I live in currently is depressing, literally depressing. Everyone is depressed because they all know their future. Chapter 1.

Ethan’s POV.

Let’s all agree about something first, coffee is amazing. It doesn’t matter if it’s black, sweet, or in ice cream, it’s darn amazing. I grab a cup of freshly brewed coffee and pick up the hazelnut creamer, I pour in the creamer until it’s just the right shade of light brown. I take a big sip and burn my tongue a little, oh well, looks like I’ll be dealing with that all day. I finish my coffee and put the mug in the sink. I walk into my room and see my two outfit choices, blue jeans and a gray hoodie or blue jeans with a blue jean jacket.

I decide to just combine the two and I put on some dark jeans with the gray hoodie and the blue jean jacket, I pick up my phone and look if I have any notifications. One text from Bella,

My Bell <3: Hey, Brandon got his results back from the doctor! They know how to treat him now, isn’t that amazing?!

I smile wide, Brandon is Bella’s little brother, he was diagnosed with a rare disease a few months back and the doctors didn’t know how to treat him. I grin knowing that I am the first of Bella’s friends to know this, but then I realize that if Dean had a phone he would have known before me. Bella is oblivious to my feelings toward her, and Dean’s oblivious to Bella’s feelings for him. I hate that I can’t be the one to comfort Bella and instead it’s Dean.

Me: That’s absolutely amazing Bella! Tell the little dude to hang in there for his treatments and that it will be all be over soon!

I see that she’s read the message and wait for her to reply, but it never comes, oh well, I’ll see her at school. I walk back downstairs and peck my mom on the cheek before jumping in my car and heading to school, before I know it, I’m in my parking spot and walking toward the doors.

“Hey man, finally confess your undying love for Bella yet?” I roll my eyes at my rather large friend Eddy, he’s always been bullied because of his size, but that all stopped after I threatened everyone within an inch of their lives. “No dude, she’d never talk to me again, you know how she feels about Dean,” Eddy shakes his head, “once you tell her how you feel, she’ll realize how not in love with Dean she is!”

I let out a dry laugh, “yeah, that would definitely happen,” Eddy starts to grin, “dude, I have the greatest idea in the history of ideas!” I groan, “Ed, please don’t-” he cuts me off, “no dude, listen, Bella likes Dean right?” I roll my eyes and nod, everyone knows that, “but Dean likes Ashley,” I turn towards him and give a suspicious look. “What are you getting at Ed?” He shushes me, “and you like Bella, so all you have to do, is help Dean get with Ashley that way Bella realizes that it’s hopeless!”

“Ed, that would be great and all, but how could I do that to Bella? She’d be heartbroken, especially knowing that I of all people helped Dean out, she already knows we hate each other’s guts.” Ed nods, contemplating this, then his eyes light up, “ok, Ethan, thank me later, I’ll be right back!” “Wait! Ed! Where are you going?” I sigh as I watch him run down the hall. I turn around to see Mandy leaning on the locker next to mine, I roll my eyes for what seems like the hundredth time today.

“What do you want Mandy?” She smiles and tries to rub my back like a psycho, I grab her wrist and take her hand off my back. “Mandy, not now, go bother Matt,” Matt is the quarterback and Mandy is the head cheerleader, their dating to keep the cliché going, but they cheat on each other all the time. She sighs dramatically, “Matt isn’t the same as you Ethan,” I nod my head, “yes, Mandy, there aren’t two of the same people, obviously.” She frowns, “why can’t you just let me have my way with you and then walk off?” I glare at her, “because Mandy, I’m not a toy.”

She frowns again, “I didn’t mean to say it like that,” I shrug, “maybe not, but you and I both know it’s the truth.” The bell rings and I sigh with relief, “bye Mandy,” she calls for me to wait up, but I hurry and jog through the halls. I make it to my first class, the one class that I have with Bella, I take my seat beside her, “hey, what’s up?” She turns and smiles, but I can see a frown pulling at her lips, “what’s wrong Bell?” She turns a little away from me towards the window, the light coming from the window letting me see the unshed tear.

I don’t ask any questions, I just place a hand on her shoulder and she leans the rest of the way into me. “I saw Dean staring at Ashley again, he didn’t even listen to what I had to say about Brandon,” I grind my teeth. Dean is such an idiot, I don’t say anything though, I’d probably say something not so nice and that wouldn’t make Bella feel any better now would it? “I love you Ethan,” I jolt, “what did you say Bell?” She looks up at me and smiles, “I said, I love you Ethan, you’re always there for me, you’re such an awesome friend.” I almost had a heart attack, but friend zoned once again, that’s my life anymore. “I love you too Bell,” part of me wants her to hear the extra feeling behind my words, while the other part is yelling at me to shut up.

The teacher starts talking about evolving technology and ultimately the UC, it’s been modified through the years, but still the same results. The UC is a device that shows you your death and when you will die, it’s quite a depressing thing and causes people to be depressed. Me, Bella, and Dean’s family have decided that we’d rather be ignorant to our impending deaths than to be clinically depressed for the rest of our lives. You can tell the teacher has been shown his future because he talks monotonously.

I tune out the rest, it’s always the same anyway, you must be over the age of eighteen to use a UC, but some people disregard that rule. You must also be mentally prepared for what you’re about to see, again some people disregard that rule, but who would ever be prepared to witness their own death? Bella still leans close to me and I can’t say that I want class to end, because that means Bella would sit up and go to her free period. Thankfully I have free period as well, but Dean does too, which means that instead of hanging out with me, she’ll run to Dean.

Sadly first period ended too soon and Bella stands up, grabs her things and walks out of class. I take my time, I grab my things and I’m the last to walk out, “hey, Ethan, right?” I turn around to see a guy about my age standing just outside the door, “yeah?” He smiles, “you haven’t seen how you’re gonna die have you?” I shake my head, “no, have you?” He chuckles darkly, “yes I have, and guess what? You, my dear friend, are going to kill me.” I scrunch up my face, “there’s no way, I wouldn’t kill anyone.”

He looks at me with no sign of the humor that was once there, “for her you will.” He whispers, and then he turns away and disappears, I don’t know who he thinks he is just walking up to me like that, but I can’t stop thinking about the last words he said “for her you will.” A shiver goes down my spine and I vow right then and there that I would never kill unless my own or someone else’s life was at stake. I go back to my locker that’s actually pretty close to one of the doors to the library, and wait for Bella. Most likely she’s inside the library and once she comes out, I’ll be here.

After about ten minutes go by, Dean walks in the library, he probably knows Bella is in there now and he wants to apologize. I wait a while longer and then Bella walks out and straight to me, she looks at me with tear-stained cheeks, “I can’t do this anymore.” She grips my jacket and buries her face in my chest, I wrap my arms around her as she cries, “Bella, I want to tell you something, it’s been on my mind for a while and I think you should know.” She looks up expectantly but one of her friends taps her on the shoulder, “hey, can I borrow her for a minute?”

I just nod, and Bella walks away yet again, a few seconds later, I see Dean walk up to me. “Hey, what’s wrong with Bell?” I grit my teeth and rolls my eyes, “you have no idea how freaking lucky you are and you’re willing to throw it all away for some freaking girl whose name you don’t even know.” He looks at me, growing defensive, “what’s that supposed to mean? How does who I currently like have anything to do with you?” I blow air through my nose, he just doesn’t get it. “You’re so oblivious, but I don’t even care man, go on and fall all over yourself for ‘snow white’ if that’s what you want.” He looks at me, confused, I mean how daft can someone truly be?

“Bye.” I say and walk off, I honestly don’t know where I’m going, but I had to get away from him. He makes me want to punch him every time I see him.
