Chapter 1

The sun kissed my skin through my blinds as I lay in bed checking to see if Alexis was on her way home yet. I quickly get out of bed and throw on my only clean pair of shorts and a NIRVANA shirt. Through the halls I hear my mom's faint voice from down stairs, "Emma Lee, your breakfast is done."

Today is the last day of summer. Usually Jade, Alexis, and I would go to the beach together to celebrate our last day of freedom. But with Alexis on her way home from visiting her mom and Jade babysitting her cousin out of town there’s no point in making the trip. Even though I dont have my friends to celebrate with, I really want to make today memorable.

Since today is my last day of summer break and tomorrow I'll be starting my senior year I wasn't surprised when Luke, Jade's boyfriend invited me to the lake for a party and bonfire. Of course I'd have to clear it with my mom but that wont be hard. She's been saying yes to about everything since dad died. I contemplate texting her from my room or just going down stairs and asking her. I decide to make the journey downstairs, partly because I'm starving and partly because I have to ask about the lake party.

I prance down the stairs, grabbing a piece of bacon as I pass the table on my way to the refrigerator. My mom stands at the sink scrubbing the frying pan. "Hi sweetie, how'd you sleep?"

"Not bad," I say through my bacon filled mouth.

"Well, that's good. Any special plans today?"

"Not yet," I said as the thought of the party slipped into my mind, "However, I was wondering if I could go to a party at the lake tonight?"

"Sure, but remember curfew is at what time?" my mom says rinsing the last cooking utensil.

"I wont forget, 12 o'clock, no later."

Mom and I sit at the table while I eat my breakfast, a pile of bacon and eggs on toast. Mom skims through the paper and I check my snapchat. Of course by this time Luke's party is already on everyone's stories. I check everyone's mains as I chew my last piece of stray bacon. Mom insists on cleaning my plate so that I can hop in the shower.

I make my way back into my room to find a nicely made bed with a new pair of sandals and a pale pink off the shoulder dress. I know for sure that I didn't make my bed this morning because I was too excited about my soon to be plans. I also that I have never seen this outfit in my life. "Mom!" I call down the stairs.

"Yes honey? Did you see the outfit I laid out for you?" My mom called in return.

"Yeah, but why did you get me a new outfit?"

"I figured you could wear it to Luke's party tonight."
