First
Life. Last time I checked it, it was quite nice. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard that some people actually enjoy it. Funny thing was I didn’t even know the last time I really felt alive.
For me, life is something between living and surviving. At first when I moved to the big city, I spent so many nights crying, crawled in my old bedsheet, the only bedsheet I had. One pillow, one bedsheet and a small blanket barely cowering my body. I didn’t have much, but at least everything was clean and decent. The nights were terrible until I adopted my stray cats. Soon I was at number three so you can guess it was quite crowded at my small studio.
Besides my poor finances, I was always full of hope. I had dreams. It may sound like a joke when it comes from a woman working as a waitress, but actually, I wasn’t so miserable about my job. I knew the best is yet to come.
My “best” came as a small accident, I helped one older couple and soon they were regulars at our coffee shop. I was extremely happy being around them and just like that, soon I found myself working as an assistant at their small catering company.
You can’t even imagine my joy working for a decent salary which pays all my bills and yet there’s something to save. And I was working really hard. Even though the job itself wasn’t really hard, I was staying extra hours because I wanted to, I was simply grateful for the opportunity I couldn’t thank enough.
As days were passing by, my bosses became my best friends. More than a best friends, they became my family, my shelter. The thing was, they were quite lonely and the reason why they noticed me was because I reminded them of their daughter. She was their only child, but she passed away from a bone cancer. I couldn’t really ask about the details because I didn’t want to make them sad or something, they were quite closed about everything related to her. I wasn’t really nosey or curious, and definitely, I wasn’t rude, I simply didn’t ask anything too personal because I didn’t want them to ask me some sensitive personal questions. And they didn’t. One day at work, we were finalizing the last details about catering for one small charity event for local rehab center, and they told me their daughter was an addict. Can’t describe my surprise, I just couldn’t even imagine the hell they went through.
Day by day, I was becoming more experienced, the job was really interesting and I was happy I could make myself useful and actually help Mr. and Mrs. Black with everything they needed. This job was only I had. No personal life, only my cats and late night video calls with my old high school friends.
To be completely honest, it was quite simple and I enjoyed it. Sundays were reserved for Mr. and Mrs. Black and that was the only day I was going out or having human beings at my place, two of them were my only social life. Not that I was complaining, but Mrs. Black, Sofia, started to ask when I’ll start dating. Like it was something you can easily begin after the years of loneliness. I couldn’t even imagine to have someone in my life. I never had a real loving relationship. The idea of being alone was terrifying but some things in life you can’t force. I felt like I was waiting something. As a matter of fact, I was waiting, and it came totally uninvited.
It’s been three years since I started working for Sofia and Alfred, and everything was great. I wasn’t only an assistant, now I was their right hand.
Waking up at 6 o’clock every morning, an hour and a half later, I was at my office. When I began to work for Mr. and Mrs. Black, my workplace was a small desk on the first floor of the building, and it was crowded with people. I was shocked how easy and pleasant is to work without loud noise and constantly being poked amd disturbed by other employees.
My office was at the last floor of our small business building. Nothing fancy, medium sized and very cozy and invating. I was a big fan of minimalist design, so everything there was simple, a mixture of light wood and white color, with some bright colored details, but nothing much because I hated the useless clutter.
Twelve hours of work than going home. Sofia and Alfred now demand I go to every event and make sure everything goes perfect, so there’s no need to say that my days were very busy, sometimes I didn’t have time to eat. I really didn’t want to disappoint Mr. and Mrs. Black and I was doing everything I can to make them proud. Some people at company underestimated me, but my actions made it clear they were wrong.
