Chapter 1

You know I’ve never been the type to go off and do something dangerous. Like something you see in movies and read about in books. Where they leap off cliffs, jump from moving cars, or run from burning, exploding buildings. No definitely not me. I’d rather be home or at a library with my nose in a book.

So how did I let myself get dared? That I cannot answer myself, but here I am, inside the once grand hotel from the 1950′s, that is now in shambles. With a giant hole in the middle of the lobby’s floor. Rumor has it that if you go down you never come back up. Some say there’s a curse, instant death. Others think there’s magic that makes you disappear to another planet. By the sound of both, I don’t care which one it is. As long as I don’t go down.

“Come on Ryn! Go down.” I looked over my right shoulder at Millie Thompson. A tall, dark, and rich blonde. Who’s spoiled rotten. And the very reason I’m standing here right now. Flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder. She walked pasted me to the edge. “I’ll go down first since this scariedy cat won’t go.”

Be my guest I muttered. I watched as Millie’s three guy friends she brought along, tied the rope around her waist. She lowered herself into the hole until you could only see half of her. Releasing the rope in her hands she dropped all the way to the bottom.

I started to walk as slowly as I could to the edge. Peeking down into the opening, I felt nervous all over again. It was a very long ways down and dark.

“Come on!” Millie was yelling up at me. I could barely see her blonde head in the darkness with her flashlight on. I grabbed the rope the guys drugged back up. One of them handed me a flashlight as I let the others tie it around my waist. Taking a deep breath when the rope was tied, I closed my eyes, then stepped off the edge into the nothing.

My stomach dropped as soon as I stepped off. I held back a scream, I felt in my throat. The cool air rushing passed me. It was very quick to the bottom. A lot quicker then it looked from the top. Taking only a few seconds to reach it. Still dangling in the air a few feet from the ground. Squeezing the flashlight hard in my hand. I couldn’t open my eyes at first. I was still trying to catch my breath and calm myself from that drop.

When I finally opened my eyes I looked straight up. I could see all of Millie’s friends staring down at me. They were all grinning. Something just didn't feel right at all. The hair at the base of my neck prickled. Flashlight between my legs as I started to untie the rope. I had a little trouble with the knot, with my hands being so shaky.

“Oh my! Look at this?” I half turned and screeched no. Millie’s hand was about to touch this glowing sphere. Afraid of what could happen if she touched it. Not knowing what it was, or where it came from. Even how it came to be down this hole. I couldn’t stop her. So I screamed just as her hand touched it. Then there was a blinding light and everything went white.

“Everything you know will now disappear. Fading one by one, until there’s nothing left.” The deep male voice inside my head was saying. A shudder ran down my spine. It all happened so quickly. I didn't even have time to think.

The next thing I knew I was standing in thin air, though it was like I was standing on something solid. Looking up, down, and all around was absolutely nothing, just white empty air. Except near my left was an opening that looked as if it was a doorway to something but I wasn’t sure what. All I could think about was why the heck did I go down?
