Chapter 1: A Fresh Start
Jennie
"Can we take a break, Jisoo? I'm so tired." I sighed as I flopped down onto the couch. My body is aching from carrying boxes from my 5-year old Honda to our new room on the 5th floor.
Jisoo and I have been best friends since we started college. She is the only one who knew about my situation at home, and had stuck by me til this day. My family is not well-off, my mum is the runs a small local bakery back home just 4 hours away from the city, and my dad does gardening jobs, while my younger brother, Bobby, goes to a community college near home - the only one we could afford.
With my parents' income, it is barely enough to cover the expenses each month, so Bobby has to take up tutoring outside school hours to help pay the bills at home. As for me, I have decided to move to the city to find a job that could provide me with enough to help out my family while living comfortably here. I had discussed the situation with Jisoo and we have both agreed to move to the city together, this really helped my situation as we could split the bills and other expenses being roommates and all.
"Phew, that's the last one!" Jisoo stated firmly, wiping off the sweat formed on her forehead after putting the last box down.
The room is a mess, boxes everywhere, things scattered across the floor. The apartment itself is rather small; the living room is painted in white with navy carpet flooring with stains I do not wish to find out what. Yuck. The kitchen itself is perfect for two, there is an old stove right next to the fridge where we have stuck photos of us and various magnets on. The countertops are not the newest, but we could do with just that. There are two bedrooms in this apartment, both with single bed and a set of desk and chair. The room is pretty good for its price I found while searching on forums for "cheap rooms for rent".
I run my hand through my hair and tied it up in a messy bun, "Do you want to unpack now? Or should we wait till tomorrow to do so?" I giggled hoping she would go with the latter. I was sweating so much, wondering if it's just the heat or from carrying these boxes up the stairs.
"Hell no, Jenjen. I'm too tired for all that crap." Jisoo shook her head furiously while letting herself drop onto the couch next to me.
I laughed, "Alright alright, how about we grab something to eat? It's already 8pm anyway, we've been moving all day, you must be hungry."
Stretching, I stood up as I took a glance at my watch, realising that we have not eaten all day. I slowly dragged my feet across the room to where my bag is, grabbed my phone beside it and turned around to face a pout on Jisoo's face. "What is it? What do you want? I know that pout." I smiled, I know that pout, Jisoo only does it when she wants something.
"Jenjen ah, could we please splurge a little for dinner today? Dinner at some diner and perhaps drinks afterwards? We have been working hard all day carrying these boxes and god, the couch! Man, was it heavy," Jisoo pleaded, "And and... you haven't been eating much lately, to top that off, we haven't eaten anything all day, and I could really use a nice cold beer as a reward for being such a good, and hardworking roommate." She grinned with her arms folded across her chest, looking proud. "Chichu, we've talked about this. We don't have that much to spend on unnecessary things like drinks. Besides, we haven't done any research on the company yet, we won't be ready for the interview tomorrow if we stay out tonight. Besides, we need our beauty sleep before the big day." I stated with my hands on my waist.
I feel bad for her, for us. Yes, we haven't been eating well lately, just take-aways and fast-food during our drive from home as a way to save up money for the deposit for the apartment. What can I say, we do not have that much money to be spending on privileges like getting drunk and having fun.
"Come on Jennie, relax. We've got this, you know that. What are you so worried about? Out of 30 applicants, we are the only two chosen for the interview. I'm sure they'll pick us anyway. Besides, they won't be able to turn you away with that 4.0 gpa and an outstanding list of participations and activities you've got there! One night, okay? I promise we will be practicing for the interview during dinner. You have my word." My best friend stood there pleading while trying to sound cute to persuade me.
I mean she's not wrong, out of the 30 applicants, we were the only two chosen, that must mean something right? They must have liked what was stated in my resume, right? "Hold up... Are you actually nervous about the interview or meeting the one and only Lalisa Manoban?" Jisoo smirked and winking as she mentioned her name.
Yes, I'll admit it, I do have a crush on Miss Manoban. I mean who wouldn't? She's sinfully gorgeous with her captivating brown eyes and such sharp and strong features. I've seen her name stamped across magazines and tabloids many times as she makes headlines leaving and entering clubs and her apartment with different girls every night, she has always, somehow, catches my attention. I'm just your typical innocent girl who has never encounter any type of sexual interactions before, well, only a peck on the lips, while my crush on the other hand, is... a sexual beast. And yet I feel some sort of weird sexual attraction towards her. I wonder what is it that makes those girls keep coming back for more? I'm sure I certainly will never get that chance to find out.
"Well...?" I was snapped out of my thoughts when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Tsk, Chichu, stop being silly. Just because I have a crush on her doesn't mean it will affect my behavior or my routine for an interview! Besides, she's way out of my league, I mean look at her. And you know this is nothing but an innocent crush." I uttered, almost a whisper while looking down fiddling with my phone. "Fine, let's go then? Dinner is on me, how about that? We'll eat and grab a couple cold beer and head back, okay?" With that, she grabbed my hand and took off for the door leaving our apartment in a mess.
