Prologue

I guess she just sort of sat there, with her hands in her hair, blood dripping everywhere. From afar, you won’t really understand it like we did. Some would say that it was all her fault. She would tell you though, that everything just took over, that her heart snapped. She would tell you something that only Scarlet would ever be able to tell you.

Her words were of a poet and you had to think before replying to her. And it wasn’t just her words that were a masterpiece, but her face too. She had emerald green eyes, long dark lashes and lips that stood out so beautifully as if she was pouting permanently. Although, it was the scar that she kept seeing in the mirror and that everyone saw before seeing anything else. The scar that was surrounded by her long golden hair, it went from the left side of her face right across her nose. Scarlet has always been the different one of our group, probably why she was the one with all the blood on her hands right now.

“How could you, Scarlet? You dragged all of us into your mess. This is so unfair,” Abby exclaimed. She looked ready to take revenge, but we all knew she wasn’t even able to move, so that wouldn’t have been possible. The thing is just, that she knew exactly what she was doing and we watched her as she did just that. We didn’t know what else to do. You can’t tell her no; you can’t tell her what she’s doing is wrong. She has her own mind, she’s not a follower. Scarlet sat with the bloody body in her lap as Kyle stood there holding the knife. Sweet, sweet Abby had tears in her eyes, she couldn’t ever unsee what she had just seen happen right in front of her.

We had tears in our eyes and hurt in our hearts. But we knew of all of this before, so we were quite hypocritical in this moment. But you don’t really ever know what is real or not. When you love someone, you nod and hope they would change into a better person because you believe that they are good already. You can’t for the life of you think of any bad within that person. She thought of all of this one night after having a dream. She phoned me up and told me that she was very distraught. I of course, didn’t know what exactly to say at eleven o’clock at night, just waking up from my own monsters as well. I thought that something had happened to her, but I was wrong. She just had a terrible dream that would change her entire life. I wish I had done something then, said something different. Maybe all of this blood wouldn’t have been here right now, maybe then we would’ve been saner in this moment. “Here I thought we were friends,” Kyle spit, “you really had all of us fucking fooled. Why can’t you just ever do all of your crazy plans on your own? Why drag in people that care for you?” Scarlet didn’t say a word yet, didn’t even look up to face us. She knew she fucked up really bad this time and there was no way we could fix this for her, or rather for ourselves.

We were filled with anger and sadness, whilst she just sat there looking without remorse, in complete silence.

Kyle didn’t stop yelling at her and Abby kept crying, with no more words on her tongue. I stood there, feeling sorry for Scarlet. I wanted to help her so much. I wanted to tell her that it’s going to be okay. Even though we all knew that it wasn’t.

I finally took in a deep breath and walked up to her, ignoring Kyle and his harsh words towards her. “Scarlet, are you okay?” I asked.

“Yes, this is so good,” Kyle exasperated, “ask the crazy one if she’s okay. Of course, she isn’t, her head isn’t okay at all!”

“Shut your mouth, Kyle,” I told him,” we won’t solve anything by yelling. People will hear us and send the cops. We should try to think of a plan now.”

“Fuck you and your plans. That’s what got us here in the first place. You and Scarlet must sort this mess out now. Stop dragging us into places we shouldn’t be, Nolan.” Kyle pulled on Abby’s arm to get her to go with him.

“Wait Kyle, we’ll get into trouble if we go out now,” she told him, “Nolan’s right, we need a plan.”

“It’s half past one in the morning, Abby, nobody will ever see us.”

“You’re fucking stupid,” Scarlet finally spoke up, “this isn’t some small town you came from. There are people outside every minute of the day.”

“She speaks,” Kyle started laughing uncontrollably and I wanted to punch him when he didn’t stop. Scarlet never took anyone’s shit, but this time was different; she didn’t say anything back to him in her defense, she didn’t even stand up yet. She was defeated and started crying. I held onto her to, trying to sooth her. This is the moment we heard the sirens, the moment we knew that everything was over for us. Scarlet haven’t stopped crying and Kyle haven’t stopped laughing yet. I wanted the world to just stop for a second so that I could get out of this mess already.

“I’m going through the back,” Abby yelled before it all blew up.
