Chapter 1
MAY 21ST. Just a day, right?
Wrong.
May 21rst was the day that the nuclear bomb dropped down on the world. The Jameson family is one of the wealthiest families in the country, so they have the best security system ever invented, but that does not decrease the intense fear in the pit of Kristyna's stomach as she sits with her family around the dinner table. Her father, Jameson Kingston, is speaking to them about his upcoming campaign to bring order back to the world, so he’s running for president.
She's not paying any attention to him; her mind is stuck on the one question that she asks herself every day. Will her family survive? The more she thinks about it, the more nervous she gets, and the more she loses my appetite.
Kristyna sets down her fork, and takes in a deep breath, her mother notices her tension and places her small, delicate hand on her shoulder. Her touch reassures her the slightest bit, and she lets out a shaky breath, she turn to look at her, and she shoots her a kind smile.
“May I be excused?” She ask quietly, she turn to my father and sees a hint of disappointment in his eyes, but he quickly covers it with a smile.
“Of course, honey. Whatever you need. On your way, would you mind stopping down to the security room and arming the system.” She nod and stands up about to grab her plate when a hand is placed on top of hers. She looks up and sees Charlie, her little brother smiling up at her.
“Don’t worry, Kristy. We’re going to be okay. We always are, remember?” She envelopes his hand in hers and gives him a small smile back.
“I know, bud. I’m just a little nervous, that’s all, but I’ll be okay.” He nods and lets go of her hand, continuing to eat his homemade chicken nuggets. Kristyna grabs her plate and walks into the kitchen to rinse it off and place it in the dishwasher, once she does she walks over to the tall metal door that leads into the security room. She take a deep breath before punching in the access pin and slowly walking in.
Around her are cameras, wires, weapons, etc. There’s so much stuff around her that she's beginning to feel claustrophobic. She walks over to the enormous monitor that shows everything around the perimeter of our house, and so far, no one has dared to go outside. After a few moments of just staring out into the street, she turn to my right and looks at the device that has the words arm and disarm.
If she press the arm button, then the entire house will be boarded up, making it so that no one from the outside will be able to come in, and none of them can come out. She lifts her shaking hand and roughly press on the arm button, an enormous weight feels like it’s being lifted off of her chest and she lets out a sigh of relief when she hears the sound of the massive metal walls sliding down over the doors and windows.
Once the entire house is secure, she hurries out of the room, unable to be in there any longer. She makes sure the door is shut tight and locked before making her way up the long spiral staircase and into her bedroom. She glances at the digital alarm clock standing on her bedside table and sees that it is a quarter past six.
Kristyna lays down on her queen-sized bed and stares up at her plain white ceiling. Her heart is beating unnaturally fast, and it’s becoming hard for her to breath, she can’t stop the tears that began flowing down her cheeks. She just lays there and cries uncontrollably until after a while; she falls asleep.

“Kristy!” She jump up at the sound of her mom’s voice and runs out of her room; she runs down the stairs and into the living room where she see her mom, dad, and two brothers all sitting on the leather couch around the large flat-screen TV that is firmly mounted on the wall. she walks over to where her mother is and sits down in the spot next to her.
“It’s time,” is all she says, then they all turn to the TV and wait. She looks at the clock right above the screen and see that it’s a minute till seven. Her legs are shaking uncontrollably, and her breath is caught in her throat, then all of a sudden, the TV cuts on, and a loud blaring noise shoots throughout the entire house.
“This is Malakai Parker announcing the commencement of the purge. All weapons have been authorized for use during the purge. All gang leaders have been granted immunity and shall not be harmed; everyone else is fair game. Commencing at the siren, any crime (including murder) will be legal for twelve continuous hours. May God be with you all.”
It begins.
