Chapter 2

Walking out to the waiting room to find the girl whom she had just operated on’s parents was the most terrifying thing Lexie has ever had to do. The parents were endlessly waiting to hear the news on their child. Unfortunately, the news that she had to relay wasn't the best. “I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but your child’s arm had major damage to it and I had to amputate it,” Lexie explained as nonchalant as she could. The parents’ tears of sorrow quickly turned into puddles all over the ground. The little girl cried, the family members cried and even Lexie cried. They knew life for their child would never be the same and at such a young age. What had happened was once Lexie got into the operating room and began removing the metal scrap, she instantly saw an infection all throughout her arm. She began to think and question how this could have happened so quickly. It turned out the infection was already there which was from a scratch that the girl had previously received and it began to spread. Whether the metal scrap fell into her arm or not, she would have had to lose it. Lexie felt awful about this but knew that's what she had to do. As she was walking into the break room, Mark stopped her. “I'm not in the mood to talk Mark. If you're looking for an answer at this moment it's no, I’m going to go home, eat a sandwich, and think feeling this way is not healthy,” said Lexie. Mark walked away, feeling upset and hopeless, knowing there was nothing he could do to change her mind.

The next day the girl, who had lost her arm, was off of Lexie’s mind. What had replaced it was what she would have to tell Mark about the proposal. All day she tried to expunge the urge to say yes even though she knew it wasn't right. As the day goes on, she avoided Mark as much as possible; if she sees him in the elevator she takes the stairs, if he is in the break room she won't go in. A couple days of this goes by until one night, he comes to her door. “Lexie, I know things have been tough and I know there is not much more I can do to change your mind but I promise if you agree to marry me you won't regret it.” Lexie then said, “I have been thinking about this for a very long time”, as she stared into his big hazel eyes, ”And I trust you and I know you will not go back to your old and bad habits, but before you make this decision you must know, I have cancer.” The two walked slowly inside to the living room and sat down. “What do you mean you have cancer, Lexie?” “I mean I went and got a scan today and the results came back positive. I'm going to have to get a lot of treatment, but they say that I have a good chance of surviving,” Lexie explained. She goes on to say, “I wanted to let you know, in case you had changed your mind about the proposal.” Mark answered, “Life is one long scary roller coaster and I want to be with you every minute of the way, living is only worth it if it is with you.” After talking it over more the two decided to get married and push the date up so that they knew Lexie would feel good and not be sick. Two months later Lexie is walking down the aisle, in a long white dress, while Mark waits for her at the end. A year later Lexie’s cancer is gone and they have two beautiful children. One boy and one girl, both resembling their mom and dad in every way and they all lived happily ever after.
