The Past
Her father played baseball down in the field as her mother watched from the sidelines. They had little to no money and played with a plastic pipe and a ball.
Her mother looked up at the sky and listened to the birds chirping and softly flapping there wings. Rosa sat on the "swing" and looked at her father missing the cloth ball over and over again.
Rosa's mother was pregnant at the time, and moved very slowly and could barely keep any food down, which was a issue for the family who lived in a dirt hut near a highway. Father couldn't keep a steady job and mother well, too many men saw her and wanted to take her as there own.
Rosa remembered having a lot of money one day, and than seeing a man put a knife up to mothers throat. She also remembered being picked up by a male about the size of father and him saying something along the lines of, "Money or your child and wife will be given to, well unreasonable men." She never understood what they meant by that; all she knew was that father handed over a large sum of money and knocked out. The next thing she remembered was waking up on the side of a highway.
Rosa glanced up at father who never let his guard down as he ruffled her hair. She leaned on him as he tossed the ball in the air as he tried to swing at it and he missed again.
"Da da," Rosa sighed, "Can I pla-" She was cut off by a scream she would remember for the rest of her life.
