Guarded

They had been together for a little over three years, but it felt like forever. They shared an apartment, two cars and a two year old daughter. However from day one, her family had never been very fond of Terrell. But despite objections from both sides, their bond was unbreakable. Every since that hot summer night that their paths crossed at a friends house party.

Brandy was a book smart and semi-shy girl from the west side of Detroit. The youngest of three siblings, she was what most would consider spoiled. Her parents showered her with gifts coupled with love. And her brothers protected her from the perils of the hood. Her family wasn’t wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but her dad kept their heads above water. Working two jobs, he made sure that his children had everything they wanted and needed. As long as they concentrated on school, he made sure the kids were adorned in the latest fashion and equipped with the newest technology. And concentrate she did.

Graduating among the top of her class, she enrolled in a local two year college. So that she could remain close to her family and friends for a little while longer. Joining a couple of her high school classmates, she was excited about embarking on her college career. Since a little girl, her dream was to become a famous singer. But in this realm of reality, she was studying to be a certified nursing assistant and then a registered nurse. With her ambitions on hold, Brandy hit the books with an equal amount of passion.

But as hard as she tried, she often found that focus was difficult to maintain though. All of her teenaged life, Brandy was cursed by the plague that is the male libido. As much as she tried to conceal it by dressing down and playing the tomboy role, there was no denying that Brandy was a total hottie. Fun-sized as they call it, she stood at five feet and three inches tall. With an apple bottom and beauty that would rival that of mid 1990′s Halle Berry. And as the old saying goes, she had to fight the boys off with a stick. Her brothers had a full time job with chasing her admirers from their doorsteps.

Through all the flowers and phone calls, Brandy stood firm in her quest to remain one of the good girls. Assuming that they all just wanted to get a taste of her goodies, she was constantly curving her would be suitors in the nicest way possible. She wanted to get her academic life together before she even entertained the thought of a relationship. Books before beaus was her motto. But then came Terrell.

By all accounts, he was a thug and nothing remotely close to her type. But there he was. He had a finely sculptured physique and well maintained long dreadlocks. And a smile that could break down the strongest woman’s defenses. This superwoman was staring into the eyes of her kryptonite.
