Chapter 1: Alfanya D. Protag
So I got a new story idea set in a magical high tech world with fey beings. I haven't planned the story out all the way but I do have an idea where I want to take it. I'm thinking of an action-packed paranormal story with a spice of romance.
I never asked to become a witch. But it was forced upon me at birth. Being the only child of two high ranking Queens, my future was set way before I was born. No matter the protest or self sabotage my destiny was forced down my throat until I gaged in submission. Now, thirty years later, I am the youngest third ranked Bishop, two stars away from becoming a Queen. I’m sure if I really wanted to, I could become King by next year and tell everybody to go shove it. Pfft, like that would ever happen, in the opinions of the more docile witch folk, I was too much of a firecracker to ever have a chance to grace the throne.
I looked past the richly dressed norm who sat behind an elegant mahogany desk to the wall to ceiling windows that framed him. The building, more like a tower, surpassed most skyscrapers in the downtown area of Solune; giving me a clear view of a city vista blanketed by the latest technological advancements. High tech drones zipped to and fro blending seamlessly with the occasional bird. How I envied the norms blissful ignorance of The Organization. Being a witch was not a blessing, nor was it a leg up on the non-magical folk, If anything it was a death sentence, an automatic draft into a millennia old war that no even knew what they were fighting for anymore. One organization with two factions split down the middle. You were either light or dark, no in betweens, no switching, and definitely no questions. But at this point, too much blood was spilled on both sides for either of us to let it go. Thus the vicious cycle continues, swallowing up more talented fey beings with the potential to make an actual difference in the world. I felt a migraine begin to throb behind my eye. I hated this war, and I hated, even more, being born a witch.
“Mhmm” A throat cleared in front of me. Oh yeah! I forgot that I was supposed to be paying attention to whatever this Norm was babbling about.
“Am I boring you, Ms. Protag?” The smooth male voice would have made any woman’s panties drop but I wasn’t interested in norm men. To be honest I wasn’t interested in any relationship, Norm or Fey.
I withdrew from my thoughts and fixed a mask of enthusiasm over my face “No, Sir” I forced myself to blush to seem more genuine. Right now this Norm thought I was just a simple personal assistant three months into her new position with a bubbling personality and a penchant for getting the details. But in actuality, he was my target. A high profiled Norm under suspicion of having evidence of the existence of The Organization. My mission is to determine if he was an actual threat and if so eliminate him. If there was one thing that the light and dark fey cared more about than killing each other, it was keeping our existence out of the hands of Norms like him. Extremely affluent types who could leverage our powers to their benefit. This one, in particular, was one of the more dangerous ones. He had influence in several parts of the world with many high ranking political officials. He started his career as a bioengineer for some nondescript company that no longer exists twenty years ago, now at age 38 he is the C.E.O of Vitruvian Corp which specializes in biological augmentation and security. Not only is he extremely intelligent and rich but also handsome and charismatic with both the male and female sexes. If he ever found out about The Organization, there is no telling how far he could go.
I felt a tingle of magic tickle down my spine. Great, what could be so important that the powers that be would summon me right in the middle of a mission. Nothing good, I bet, well at least nothing good for me. I audibly sighed, not meaning to, and mentally kicked myself for my lapse in character. The norm, who had moments ago begun pacing around the plush office stopped to turn back towards me.
“Is there something the matter, Ms. Protag?” His voice always held a superiority that pissed me off. Like he was smarter and better than you in every way like the world was his sandbox to do whatever he wanted in. If only this Norm knew that he was so low on the totem pole, maybe he wouldn’t act so arrogant.
I cleared my throat, trying to feign embarrassment. Lord knows I haven’t been embarrassed a day in my life,” Sorry sir, I was just having a bit of trouble with my terminal.” I began to tap on the halo display beaming from an intricate bangle on my left wrist. The norm stared back at me impatiently
“Shall I call for assistance Ms. Protag?” There he goes again with that smug attitude that made me want to deck him in the face! I gave it a few more taps and pulled up the virtual notepad.
“No, Mr. Bradley, I have everything set. Excuse my delay.”I fixed the circular framed glasses on my face and gave a slight blush. He seemed to be satisfied with that and continued his speech. I set my device to audio record and placed myself in an enthusiastically attentive facade. I needed him to believe that I was still listening while my consciousness would be away.
I took a deep breath and began to slow the space around me as I exhaled, turning it into this greyish blue world of muffled echoes. I detached my incorporeal self from my body to find the source of the magical ripple. Appearing on a bare wall was an ornate silver and wooden door with shimmering neon runes carved into it. Dwarven magic. Either I was about to fall into a cowardly trap or was being summoned by the elusive King himself. Either way, it meant bad news bears for me. To die once I cross the threshold or to be sent to my death later. I opened the door and stepped into the engulfing warm glow of the light faction.
“Choices…” I mumbled to myself as I prepared the butterfly knives strapped to my upper thigh.
