Chapter 1

“Your holding it wrong” I remember my father telling me, “move you hand down more”

I lowered my hand on the silver hilt, “prefect” my father praised me.

Me and my father have always been close from being 7 and learning to sword fight to being 17 and hearing the same speech on how these will be my people one day.

“Hey, pay attention,” my father said, slapping the back of my head.

“Yes sir” I replied, snapping back into reality.

We’re walking down the same road we walked down yesterday and will probably walk down tomorrow.

A little girl with dirty blonde hair and honey brown eyes, she could not be more than nine years old, walked up to me and my father. She had a yellow daisy in her hand and held it to my father.

“Why thank you Mable” My father said, smiling at the daisy as he picked it up.

Of course my father would know her name, he makes it his priority to know every one’s name who was born in this kingdom.

“Your welcome!” Said Mable smiling from ear to ear, she runned back to her mother who was buying spices from a vendor.

“You know next year it will be up to you to protect everyone who lives here like little Mable.” My father said continuing our walk.

“Protect them from what, the worst thing that has happened here is when old Peter stole some bread” I sighed.

“And that is why you’re not king yet” my father chuckled.

“Then tell me and I will be ready to be king” I whined.

“Not right now,” He said.

We turned down a corner. Our kingdom is super big, it’s small enough for my father to know everyone’s name and small enough for me to know every road by heart.

We turned on to a cobble street, all the houses here were for the wealthy. I sometimes wish i lived here instead of the castle because all the kids my age, except Kol, don’t even talk to me.’

“Oliver,” my best friend Ko yelled from across the street.

“You can go, just be home for dinner,” my father said waving at Kol.

“Yes, sir” I replied running across the cobble street.

Kol had his brown curly hair in a bun and his sky blue eyes sparkled.

“Do you want to go riding it’s a pretty day” Kol asked me

“Yeah that sounds great” I smiled.

“Ok i’ll meet you by the pond in 15”

“Ok” I said heading back to the castle stables.

Me and Kol have been friends since birth. Our fathers had been friends since they were kids too.

Kol’s father is part of my father’s court. I don’t really know the specifics. But Kol pretty much grew up as my brother. I remember when we were little i went to his house and i was so confused because his house was in the middle of the woods. I thought since his father and my father worked together Kol would live in the village if not the castle. But Kol explained to me how his family likes it out there, away from the prying eyes of neribogers.

I was with Kol when I shot my first deer, I was so excited.

“Hey be quiet it will hear” Kol said cructing down behind a bush.

“Ok,” I replied.

We had been walking for what felt like hours. Kol had always been good at hunting and had begged me to go with him. I finally gave after he got attacked by a wolf. I thought it would be safer for him if he didnt go alone.

As we were cructing in the bush a deer walked out from behind a tree. It was huge but it wasn’t small either.“They can’t see very well so they rely on their ears.” Kol whispered to me, the deer turned its head away from us. “Ok it’s looking away, draw your arrow and aim above his front leg” Kol said.

I did as he said and released. The arrow went a little above where i amided. It fell on its side and twitches its tail a little but other than that it didn’t move at all.

“Come on” Kol said excitedly, “We have to hurry before a wolf or something smells the blood”

I ran beside Kol who was now bendin over the deer. It’s blood had started to gush out around the arrow, with one pulled he took the arrow out of the deer and rubbed it on the deer to get the blood off.

“Here” He handed it to me, “Now i’ll grab its front legs and you grab its back”

I quickly grabbed its back legs and helped Kol carry it back to his house.

“How much do you think we can get for his hind?” Kol asked, trying to start a conversation.

“I don’t know, I hope to get some stronger arrows,” I said.

“Why, do you want to try and get something bigger?” Kol asked.

“Yeah i would love to kill a wolf”

Kol went sincent for a moment.

“Well if you ever decide to go take me with you” Kol said.

“Of course” I replied smiling.

“Back so soon?” my father asked who was standing in the stables.

“No sir, me and Kol are going to go riding for a little”

“Ok be safe and don’t go too far it will be dark soon”

“Yes sir, ″ I said grabbing my equipment.
