MIRROR
MIRROR
This morning, I woke up in a good mood. Everything is planned. My high school is over. I am going to start college at one of the best universities in the country in exactly 3 weeks from now. I have got the best parents in the world. My boyfriend and I are going to the same college, not to mention, he loves me beyond words. Life is good.
“Tina”, my mom called me downstairs for breakfast. I told her I love her from the top of the stairs. I must be going crazy from all the happiness. She said she loves to see this happy change in me. “This Change is better?” I asked gesturing to myself “It’s the best”, she replied beaming cheerfully.
I hurried to the shower and later dressed in my favorite blue skirt and black top. Mom and I were going shopping today. Yay.
Among all the chaos, I forgot about the mirror. I had to fix my hair and apply my lip gloss. I had to use the mirror. I frowned and walked with heavy steps towards the spooky mirror. I had never liked it. It was an antique that mom had picked up from the re-sale shop at a very nominal price. She treasured it. I had not had the heart to tell her till now to get rid of it for good. Though, I would soon have to.
I was tying my hair up in a ponytail when the comb fell down from my hands. I bent down to pick it up, when I got up again, my image in the mirror started to get distorted. Almost immediately, it was replaced with the image of a girl who looked exactly like me, dressed exactly like me but she was crying bitterly. Banging on the invisible wall on the other side of the mirror, she kept shouting hoarsely, “Let me out, please let me out.” “Please...Please...”
I smiled, “Shhhh... You’ll have to learn how to live on the other side. If you cry too loud, they’ll hear you and come for you.” She fell down on her knees, still crying. “Don’t be so awful Tina”, I tried to console her. “We’ll soon get rid of this mirror. Then, you can exchange places with whomever uses it next. Okay? It may take some, maybe a hundred years or two till you learn how to do that. Don’t worry I stayed in there for 400 years.”
“Nooooooooooooo.......” she kept screeching in my ears.
“Nobody else can hear you in this world bitch.” I told her irritably before I went downstairs to go shopping with mom. How lovely it is to be alive and loved again, I thought. I have never liked that spooky mirror, not even when I lived in it.
