Chapter One: Megan

Meg honey, wake up, time for breakfast. I inhale… ahh - Cinnamon buns with fruit and melted butter- my favorite. As I walk into the kitchen I see my father contently reading the newspaper while sipping coffee with extra milk and sugar; he smiles when I walk in, his expression the definition of joy. Morning sweetheart. Almost ready for school? You better be scared about that Geometry test. I grin and let out a laugh, we both know that’s my favorite subject and I’ll easily ace it. Mom hands be a toasted bagel and my lunch as I grab my backpack. Love you, sweetie, have a great day. I smile and say goodbye as I walk out the door and head for school. However I turn around when I hear my mother- Meg come on! Megan! Megan! Megan!.....

“Megan Rodgers, wake up this instant!”. This is the third time this year! Don’t make me send you to detention again.” I let out a small groan of frustration. Just a dream. It’s always just a dream. “Now ladies and gentlemen, who can tell me what element on the periodic table…” I slowly begin to zone out again; Mr. Ellis is probably going to tell Ms. O’Leary about my little “mishap” in his Chemistry class, and why I now need to stay after school to actually learn the lesson. Mrs. O’Leary is the director of the foster home right now, and until I’m passed on to another family or turn eighteen (whichever happens first), she’s my legal guardian. I run my hands through my straggly blonde hair and let out a long sigh. My eyes wander around the room, and catch Hailey Summers; smart, funny, tons of friends, lives in one of the rich neighborhoods with her picture perfect parents and picture perfect life. I wish she had a picture-perfect personality.

“Mr. Ellis?”

“Yes Hailey?”

“Don’t you think it’s quite unfair that some people get more beauty sleep than others?”. The whole class snickers as sink down deeper into my desk.

“That question is quite irrelevant Miss Summers. Now class tonight for homework please complete pages 169-184 in your textbook and write two paragraphs summarizing the information.” I didn’t realize I was holding by breath this long until the bell rings. I quickly gather my books at a foolish attempt to leave the room, but Mr. Ellis inevitably stops me just before I reach the door. “Megan, I contacted Dr. Stepinson and she would like to meet with you before lunch. I also will have to call Mrs. O’Leary to inform her why you have to see the principal for the fifth time this month.I expect that I will be seeing you after school to complete the portion of lesson that you missed while you decided to leave us today.” I mumble a quick reply and finally step out into the hallway. Fun times.
