Summary

What would you do after your best friend betrayed you? Would you pretend like nothing ever happened and try to get on with your life or would you try to get even? Rachel Cox wasn't the type to let it go. So, after Jessica Smith tried to stick a knife in her back to gain some popularity while bullying her in the process, Rachel got completely pissed off at her ex-best friend. And after Jessica showed her true colors, she decided to take away the only thing Jessica valued. Her newfound popularity. This isn't your typical bad boy meets the good girl story. Oh, no. It's the bad girl meets the bad boy one while getting even. Because being bad was always more fun than obeying the rules.

Prologue: Wildcard

Hello, everyone!

This is my first story here on Inkitt and I decided it would be best to start with a prologue. Honestly, I just hope that you’re going to like it and I’m looking forward to your comments and thoughts on the story. This particular one was on my mind for a couple of years now and I only written down this prologue before actually pursuing the writing itself.

I guess I can thank the global pandemic and being shut down in the house for an undefined amount of time for overpowering my enourmous writer's block.

Oh, and if you’re curious about the chapter names, they are names of playing cards taken as a pun because of the book name. For instance, a Wildcard is a Joker :)

________________

The shitshow that happened before school that day could probably be seen coming from a mile away.

It’s just that I didn’t really pay attention at what was going on at school. For the last three years, it would seem. So much so that I was honestly happy Jessica finally made it to the cheer team, even as a backup.

I’m guessing that wasn’t her only goal, judging by the cackling and screaming my best friend was doing in my face, calling me a nerd and a loser backed up by Maggie Willis and Beverly Johnson, cheerleading captain and co-captain.

The gleeful look in Jessica’s eyes was obvious as she looked me up and down while sneering at me in disgust. „Rachel, you loser,“ she said again and strutted down the hallway, the three of them leaving smudge marks on the very air with their overly made up faces.

Taking in all the sympathetic looks I got from the surrounding kids, I wasn’t surprised at all.

There I was, standing in my white sneakers, grey sweatshirt and sweatpants that were way too big for me, with my hair in a messy bun and blocky black glasses on my nose, while the Queen Bee and her clique walked away from me after a showdown in the long locker filled hallway. But even though I looked helpless, I was far from that.

I narrowed my eyes and said: „You’ll be sorry for that,“ loud enough so Jessica could hear me. Her step faltered for a second.

My mouth twitched into a smirk as I calmly collected my books and went to class, completely and utterly pissed of at my ex-best friend.

Knowing how delusional Jessica was, she didn’t expect me to get back at her.

And I knew what was going to hurt her the most. After all, she worked three years straight to get it.

I was going to take away her newfound popularity.
