Summary

Pain. Four letters. One word. And not the physical kind. I'm talking about emotional pain. A pain so intense that it consumes you. Completely changes you inside and out, from the way you think to the way you look. The type of pain that makes you cry until your eyes run dry. The type of pain that makes your voice hoarse from all your cries of agony that go unheard. A pain so intense that you lose all hope and have nothing left to live for... That is, until he came along. He made me remember the reason why I wanted to live. Whenever the darkness threatened to consume me, he was the light that gave me hope that no matter how dark it gets, the sun will still rise the next day. _______________ "Even ashes were once wood that fueled a raging fire. So no matter how hopeless you feel, just remember that there's a fire burning in you, Ariana Willow. You just need to ignite it. Even if I have to be wood that would burn in the process, so be it."

PROLOGUE

"I'm sorry"

We've all heard that one before. Just another empty word said out of routine and me being the stereotypical human female says:

"It's fine." why I said this? I'll never know. Maybe if he can lie about actually caring about me for one second and actually apologise for once in his life and really mean it. Maybe then I can pretend that I'm not hurting. That what he did didn't affect me. That what he said were just words and not splinters in my heart. As small as splinters can be, they still hurt. So as many times I tell myself that it never hurt,

It did... It does.

My whole life I've been lied to and my whole life I pretended to not care. And Hayden Carter is just another lie that I pretended to not care about. So I did what most girls would do in a situation like this. I look him straight in the eyes- eyes that used to stare at me lovingly but now are empty and distant-, I raise my hand and thrust it at his face with full speed- but I'm not like most girls-, my palm stopping right before it can touch his cheek.

With his eyes wide and the audience of the idiots who played a role in all of this, I lean in until I'm just a breath away from him.

"I hope you can find a girl that makes you happy... because clearly I couldn't." I whispered sorrowful.

With a sad smile marring my face, I walk away, and I leave him in the middle of campus just staring after me.

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it's yours. If it doesn't, it was never yours. But I know he will never come back. In order to do that he would have actually had to love me in the first place.

And that's what hurts the most. Because for a moment I actually thought...

Exactly. I thought.

How foolish of me.

As I try to speed walk as quickly as I can before I have a breakdown, I bump into someone. Without looking up at the person I mumble a quick "sorry" and continue to walking away only for that someone to grab hold of my arm.

"Are you okay?"

All I can say to the handsome stranger with tears brimming my eyes "I'm fine. "

Lie.

But I know it's going to be alright.

Another lie to add to the never ending cycle of my miserable existence.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters.
