Prologue: The Vow

Narrator

The gloomy clouds had come down over the city of Los Angeles. They were restless and had brought a heavy storm with them. The lightnings caused tunders sounding so sinister, it made everyone restless that night. Only one old man seemed unaffected by it all. It was beacuse of his personal storm that was raging inside of him. He was sitting in his office, at the highest floor of his mansion, lost deep in his toughts. Something he was missing. It was like it was right in front of him, but he couldn’t decipher what. Nor how. But the most important question was who?. It must be someone from the inside. But who? He had already confronted too many of his men, wrongfully, it made a discord between him and his peers. The next one he uncovers has to be the right one. No more mistakes. There’s no more time for that.

As he was so consumed in his toughts, he didn’t notice that someone slid in through the big balcony doors.

“Good evening.” said a dark figure.

Maxwell turned towards the voice and squinted. A young man, dressed all in black, and a little wet from the rain, was approacing him.

“Finally we meet.” he spoke again, his voice full of hatred.

Maxwell wasn’t scared, but confused. How the hell did that goon get in? Maxwell personally made sure the whole property was safe.

“Who are you and what do you want?”

“I’m a herald of death and I will make you meet your end.”

The young man was almost growling but Maxwell wasn’t impressed. He observed him for a while. So some hooligan broke into his home and tought he could owerpower him? Those young generations must be some new level of crazy, he tought. They’re so disrespectful. At last he sneered.

“Just go.” he waved away to the intruder who was shocked by how nonchalant Maxwell was. “C’mon. Leave. You won’t do anything.”

The young man got so furious in a split of a secod and jumped at Maxwell, pinning him to the shelves and making half of it’s content fall down.

“Don’t be so sure of yourself you bastard!”

Then, some quiet beeping took their attention. The monitor on the desk showed some masked men trying to get through some door. The camera seemed to be placed on a spyhole. Maxwell took a good look at the man in the back.

“That son of a bitch. I knew it. I knew I was missing something! But him? Of all people... Him!” Maxwell got furious and very upset. His breathing became heavy and he could not calm down. How could he not see? They were close for so long. When did he start working behind his back? Maxwell was shaking and feeling strong sudden pain piercing his chest. This can’t be it.

“You’ve got to help me. You’ve got to save her!” Maxwell grabed the young man’s hands, that were still holding onto his shirt. “She can’t stay here! You have to get her away from here!” His panicked eyes went to the pictures of him with a beautiful, blonde girl.

He was about to say something more but his words got stuck in his throat. He groaned, putting his hand to his chest. At last his face stiffened and he fell still.

“Father, what’s all the noise? Fath..?”

A girl got to the doorway, stupefied.

“DAD!” she squealed and ran to where he was lying on the floor.

The man in black was standing there, not believing what just happened. That old piece of shit died. Just like that. He didn’t even manage to scare him, let alone finish him. His own thoughts were a mess, the old man’s words were still echoing in his head and the girl’s painful cries were making it impossible for him to think. But he had to act fast because those men were closer every second. There was no time to hasistate anymore so he grabed the girl despite her scrambling and they dissapeared into the night.
