Summary

The global warming opens the Northwest Passage near the Russian north coast in the Arctic for ship transportation in the summer. North Korea takes the opportunity to smuggle their biological weapons using the Russian convoy through the Northwest Passage. When Dr. Tony arrives at the US Navy base in Tokyo for his new assignment, he quickly finds himself at the center of political intrigue, military posturing, and a spy world where even the weather data in the Arctic has become critical information in the new cold war. Taiwan readies a secret “super submarine”, while the US funds a daring plan to raid a seemingly harmless North Korea oil tanker in the Russian convoy. From Tokyo to Headquarters in Hawaii, to meetings in Hokkaido and Taipei, to the satellite station in Alaska, and a final show-down in the Arctic Oceans, Arctic Storms takes readers around the world and explores a new kind of conflict where satellite monitoring of sea-ice is used for submarine maneuvers. NASA Scientist Dr. Antony Liu pulls from his expert knowledge of anti-submarine warfare in the Arctic to create a pulse-pounding plot that concludes with an assault operation during the Arctic storms. This novel is a startling blueprint for possible future wars in the Arctic oceans.

In the Arctic Ocean, a storm can spark a new cold war.

Global warming opens the Northwest Passage near the Russian north coast in the Arctic for ship transportation in the Summer. North Korea takes the opportunity to smuggle their biological weapons of mass destruction using the Russian convoy through the Northwest Passage. Taiwan readies a secret “super submarine”, while the US Pacific Command funds a daring plan to raid a seemingly harmless oil tanker of North Korea in the Russian convoy. The satellite monitoring of sea-ice motion in the storm is crucial for ship operations in the Arctic. Above all the machinations, one force reigns supreme: the Arctic storms.

Dr. Tony, an American oceanographer, gets what appears to be the perfect job at NASA, studying the sea-ice motion in the Arctic oceans. But when he arrives at the US Navy base in Tokyo on his new assignment, he quickly finds himself at the center of political intrigue, military posturing, and even a spy world, where the weather data in the Arctic has become critical information in the new cold war. Anti-submarine warfare in the Arctic can be tricky and deadly with all the ice cover on the sea surface. With new high tech facilities, the US and Russia have strengthened their military capabilities in the Arctic for competition of resources and powers. This novel is a startling blueprint for the wars in the Arctic oceans.

The author formerly served in NASA in Washington DC, and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in Tokyo. This story brings power politics and espionage to life along with the real science behind every page and the frighteningly realistic scenarios that unfold. The following novel was inspired by real world trends and technologies. It is dedicated to the innovators, technologists, and the just plain bold strategists who have struck out all odds to make a better peaceful world. But ultimately, this novel is still a work of science fiction. References to real people, events, establishments, and organizations are intended only to provide a sense of authenticity and are used fictitiously. All other characters, and all incidents and dialogue, are drawn from the author’s imagination and are not to be construed as real. The early Chinese version of this novel has recently been published in Taiwan.
