Prologue
Ethan
I fucked up real bad and now I have to leave the city, leave my home and my family. Everything I’ve ever known is here but now the police are after me and I have to leave before they catch me and throw me in jail. I drive up to mom’s house and walk inside.
“Mama.” I call. She comes out of the kitchen with a smile on her face.
“Hi darling. What are you doing here so late?”
“Can we sit down?” I ask, my voice rough with emotion. She nods and leads me to the living room to sit down. She grabs my hand and worry etches her face.
“What’s wrong Ethan?”
“I have to leave. I have to go away for a while.”
“What? Why?” She asks, concern lacing her voice.
“I messed up tonight and now the police are after me. They will arrest me and I’ll go to jail but if I leave the city now then I’ll be safe.”
“When will you come back?” Mom asks, tears in her eyes.
“When it’s safe. Derek and the guys are going to work on it and I’ll come back as soon as the police are no longer interested in me. I’ll try my best though to keep in touch with you.”
“I know you will.” She says. “Be safe baby, I love you.”
“I love you too mama.” I kiss her cheek and she wraps her arms around me hugging me tightly.
“I have to go.” I tell her. She lets go of me and my heart breaks at seeing the tears on her cheeks. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay Ethan, I just want you to be safe. We will see each other again but for now you need to go and take care of yourself.” She hugs me again and then I leave, holding back my tears. I climb onto my bike and speed down the dirt road. I speed through all of the back roads until I’m out of the city. I have no idea where I’m going, no idea when I’ll be able to come back but like my mom told me I have to do this to be safe and to take care of myself. I just hope that I don’t have to be on my own for very long. I hope that I’ll be able to come home soon.
