Unrequited Love

“Do not mock me!” Her eyes were glazed over in a sea of tears, waiting to brim over. The woman clenched her fists around her skirts, her hands cramping, her knuckles aching from the pain. She set her face, her gaze looked up at him. “Do not think that you know me, or anything that I have gone through.” She released her skirts and approached the man, sharply poking her finger into his chest. “ You were not there…. You never were.” The woman’s nose burned, holding back the pain. He would never see her tears.

“But, I was.” His hand reached out towards hers but grasped for air instead.

“No.” She looked down, unable to meet his gaze. “You left me.” Hot tears rolled down her cheeks. “You left me, you….” her voice broke and she collapsed into sobs onto the cold ground and wept.
