The Masking Darkness
She had never encountered anything so gruesome in her life, and she had seen some fairly revolting things: People being eaten alive, men being forced to feed on their own feces in order to survive; even a person with their insides torn out and hung up as streamers, like decorations for a birthday party. This, however, took the cake. Oh lord… Just the thought of cake made her gag. Not now, she thought, cake is not appropriate. She closed her eyes, and then reopened them, just to be sure that what she was witnessing was truly there. It was.
At least 20 bodies lay before her, lifeless and decomposing. The smell was absolutely acrid, for the bodies had been rotting for probably weeks, or perhaps even months, but she was not certain. She couldn’t quite think clearly, for the dangerous scent attacked her defenseless brain. No matter how many times something like this may occur, she will never get used to the smell of death, especially when it involved regurgitated food. So… Much… Vomit.
Everybody had had their mouths stitched shut, and then forced to vomit until the food in which supported life came back to end it. Irony can be found in even the strangest of places. It looked as if the bottom of each person’s esophagus had been sliced open, exposing the meals of the victims’ past. Why would somebody do this? That, she was unsure of.
She took a good look at the location in which she was standing. An empty and mysterious cave with very little lighting. That way, the horrors were enclosed in the dark, and dare not be shown to the light of day. The cave itself lay miles from any residents of the state of Colorado. The landscape nearby was mountainous, so nobody was supposed to find this scene of incredible inhumanity. She looked once again at the men and women who had been murdered so violently with sorrowful eyes, but the sorrow within her grew into a feeling of satisfaction.
She turned around and left the cave, leaving the darkness to stay where it was, and went on to live the unusual life she had created for herself.
Yes, she was thoroughly disgusted by the whole event, but there was nothing she could do about it. As much as she wanted to stop it from happening, as much as she disliked the smell, she couldn’t help herself. As much as she hated the haunting darkness that she continued to mask, she enjoyed the thrill of killing too much. It was sure to happen again, but only in due time. This was who she was. Some would call her a monster, a villain, a disgrace to life, but that is not what she would refer to herself as. She may be all of those things, but she lived among the rest of us. She was simply human.
