Ambi

I made my way downstairs dressed in a red skater dress my mom bought for me and four-inch gold pumps Nish got me. My sister knows the max height I can manage is three inches I don’t know what she was thinking. Thankfully I make it down the stairs without tripping, I check on Gi he was getting dressed. Mom asked Nish, Shreya, Elena and Alexi to buy a shirt to match the dress my mom got me. They got him a red athletic fit long sleeve shirt with black microdots he paired it with his slim fitting black pants.

The scent of Giovanni’s expensive cologne always gets me weak in the knees. He stood before the mirror, his fingers expertly working the buttons of the shirt that perfectly hugged his frame in all the right places.

Giovanni smirking at me as I spotted my dad's stethoscope, “I noticed you staring at that stethoscope, Ambi. If you’re looking for a heartbeat, I can save you the trouble—mine’s currently doing double-time just looking at you in that dress.”

Laughing softly, “I miss him. I’m nervous, about telling our family we’re getting married in December, you think we can really do it Mr. Delicious?”

Gi walks over, sliding his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder, “we got this babe I assure you.”

I admire the ring, then looks at Mr. Delicious playfully. “So, does this mean I have to stop calling you Mr. Delicious?"

Giovanni pulls me in closer, a wicked glint in his eye. “You can call me whatever you want, as long as you’re walking down that aisle in December.”

Gi continues, "those legs are looking sexy I can’t wait to wrap those legs around my hips later."

I blush, “thank you. You look delicious, I love your shirt. I could barely walk in these shoes!”

Hooking my arm in his, “that’s why you got me babe.”

I smile at him kissing his cheek, “ah now I finally figure out the secret to walking in these things.”

Gi chuckles, “I think having a husband is a pre-requirement to wear four-inch heels. Why are you wearing four-inch heels though?”

"Curtesy my dear sister. Well, I guess I got to work on getting me a husband," I pout.

Giovanni kisses me again before we walk out onto the patio, "those legs look amazing. You look stunning even without the heels you'll still look gorgeous. You already have the husband it's just to make it legal miss."

Joining everyone outside, the food was laid out buffet style everyone piled their plates; I stuck to moderation. I was nervous about announcing the wedding date I kept my announcement for last. We take our seats in order of age, my grandmothers, my mom, my uncles and aunts, the cousins according to ages then the children. Some of the men were on bartending duties ensuring everyone had a drink.

After a day of preparation half of our family mainly Ambi’s side were gathered in the back porch of Ambi’s mother's home for thanksgiving dinner. Starting with Ambi’s grandmothers followed by the older uncle, uncle Ish followed by Ambi’s mom continuing with the other uncles and aunts. They thank everyone for making the effort to come together and for our family including the new additions everyone wishes Brad a happy birthday. We go around the tables everyone saying their piece. Nish and Brad were happy Ambi is finally in a serious committed relationship. Brad insisted he had to further interrogate me later even though Ambi was already engaged. Aki got a bit emotional, giving thanks to me for being there for Ambi as he was always concerned about her living on her own. Yash and Izzy as well they were not as emotional. Ambi’s cousins thanked all their family for sticking together and being supportive through everything. Andi and Mira thanked everyone for their warm hospitality. The children were thankful for the food, their aunt Ambi who spoils them rotten and the holiday.

Finally, it was my turn, I read Ambi’s composure and I could tell she is nervous taking Ambi’s hand in mines we stand. I start, “on behalf of my beautiful fiancé and I. Firstly I would like to wish Brad a very happy birthday secondly, I am thankful for this beauty standing next to me and this wonderful family I have now joined. You all helped to mold my Ambi into the amazing woman she is today. I proudly get to make her my wife. I am a part of Ambi’s family as she is a part of mines. It is no longer her family and my family but our family. With that being said I would like to announce that we have decided on a wedding date. Ambi and I don’t want this year to end without making our union legal. I need my smart and beautiful wife by my side; I want to step into the New Year a happily married man we have decided on December 29th.”

The tables were silent for about thirty seconds. Andi the first to react stands raising his glass, “thank you Gi and Ambi I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present, cheers to December 29th. Uncles you got your wish they have set a date, better polish up those dancing shoes. Your days are numbered my brother. This is wonderful, Brad got an engagement for his birthday Gino, and I are getting a wedding talk about a celebration.”

The tables start to clap and cheer I notice Ambi’s mom, grans and naan looking serious. I walk over to them very assertively, “mom, grans, naan you don’t have to worry, the wedding will take place in Miami at our home that we have yet to purchase. All you have to do is the inviting and tell us what we need to get done. This wedding will be stress free I give you my word.”

Ambi’s mom gives me a slight eye roll, “are you sure about this Giovanni?”

Taking hold of mom’s hand, “yes mom. Trust me Ambi and I have this covered.”

Mom lets out a heavy sigh, "ok I'm holding you to that."

My words seem to help as I got them to smile, finally they are on board. Taking my seat next to Ambi she inquires, “everything ok?”

I have some water before speaking, “they seemed a bit apprehensive about the date, but I provided some comfort to them saying that they have very little to stress about.” Kissing Ambi on her forehead. She shakes her head, “you just made me very nervous.” Placing my hand on her leg, I lean into her, “babe with you by my side we got this.”

Before we settle back down and have our Thanksgiving dinner Ambi stands by herself, "I still have my announcement. I was waiting to have you all together to make this announcement. Even though Jeev and Veer are missing. Wait hold on," I quickly video call them once they answered, 'hey you two I miss you. I'll be as brief as possible because we are getting ready to eat.'

I hand my phone to Yash and continue with my announcement. "I know this is something you all will be thankful for. While some of you all were under the impression that Giovanni was my big surprise. My real surprise is that while on my trip to Costa Rica the spark that diminished years ago was reignited, a seminar was held in honor of our late father at the resort I was purposely accidentally sent to. We all know he wanted me to return to surgery full time after the attack. I saw a video of an interview he did where he soke highly of Jeev, Aki and myself. The interview was just after I became a surgeon and it reminded me why I became one, I am done hiding. To the prick that made me feel small and unworthy I got news for you, I am back. I am happy to announce that I will be returning to surgery full time come next year. I will be walking through those hospital doors as a full-time staff come February. The moment you all have been praying for is happening in a few months."

Everyone broke out in cheers and applause. Aki stands with his glass in hand, "best news ever cub not that Giovanni is any less of a surprise. I am so happy that you found both your love and passion in that trip. Congratulations! We love you Professor Amberline Murlani, we can't wait to see the strides you will be making. Papa would be very proud."

I felt excluded from the celebrations when Ambi announced her return to surgeries full-time. Ambi and I never spoke about it, her return to surgeries changes our life. That was what she meant that she doesn't know how a husband is going to fit into her plans.

Even though there were over forty people gathered it felt very intimate and private everyone was telling stories or jokes. I tried to get over Ambi's announcement. Ambi never mentioned that she wanted to return to surgery, I guess we do have a lot to learn about each other. After dinner we clear the tables. Some of the ladies were gathered in the kitchen. The gents were working on clearing out the deck, moving out the tables and chairs we no longer needed. The kids retrieved to the media room. With everything under control Ambi and I head to the family room planting ourselves on the sofa. "Ah finally," Ambi exclaims. I take Ambi’s knees placing them on my lap. I slide her pumps off, “princess your feet are swollen.”

“I don’t think I ever wore four-inch heels.” Ambi bawls out in agony.

I am massaging Ambi’s feet her head is on the armrest of the sofa; her eyes are closed she looks so relaxed.

Aunt Laila walks in with naan and grans she says, “are you taking appointments? I could do with one too.”

I love grans sass I see where Ambi gets it from. She tells Aunt Laila, "you have your own. Ambi had to go all the way to Costa Rica to find him.”

We chuckle at grans sass. Ambi says, “you tell them grans.”
