INT. RAVENPASS - AFTERNOON
Private Detective, KYLA HERTAL is arguing with Private Detective, DAMIEN JOHNSON.KYLA tries to hug DAMIEN but he shakes her off.
KYLA
Please Damien, don't leave me.
DAMIEN
I'm sorry Kyla, but I'm looking for somebody a bit more brave. Somebody who faces her fears head on, instead of running away.
KYLA frowns.
DAMIEN frowns.
DAMIEN
I'm sorry, KYla. I just don't feel excited by this relationship anymore.
DAMIEN leaves.
KYLA sits down, looking defeated.
Moments later, brave scout, LELAND JOHNSON barges in looking flustered.
KYLA
Goodness, Leland! Is everything okay?
LELAND
I'm afraid not.
KYLA
What is it? Don't keep me in suspense...
LELAND
It's ... a dragon ... I saw an evil dragon eat a bunch of children!
KYLA
Defenseless children?
LELAND
Yes, defenseless children!
KYLA
Bloomin' heck, Leland ! We've got to do something.
LELAND
I agree, but I wouldn't know where to start.
KYLA
You can start by telling me where this happened.
LELAND
I was...
LELAND fans himself and begins to wheeze.
KYLA
Focus Leland , focus! Where did it happen?
LELAND
a supermarket! That's right - a supermarket!
KYLA springs up and begins to run.
EXT. A ROAD - CONTINUOUS
KYLA rushes along the street, followed by LELAND. They take a short cut through some back gardens, jumping fences along the way.
EXT. A SUPERMARKET - SHORTLY AFTER
GAVIN … an evil dragon terrorises two children.
KYLA, closely followed by LELAND, rushes towards GAVIN, but suddenly stops in her tracks.
LELAND
What is is? What's the matter?
KYLA
That's not just any old dragon, that's Gavin …!
LELAND
Who's Gavin …?
KYLA
Who's Gavin …? Who's Gavin …? Only the most evil dragon in the universe!
LELAND
Blinkin' knickers, Kyla! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most evil dragon in the universe!
KYLA
You can say that again.
KYLA
I'm going to need swords, lots of swords.
Gavin turns and sees Kyla and Leland. He grins an evil grin.
GAVIN
Kyla ..., we meet again.
LELAND
You've met?
KYLA
Yes. It was a long, long time ago...
EXT. A PARK - BACK IN TIME
A young KYLA is sitting in a park listening to some rock music, when suddenly a dark shadow casts over her.
She looks up and sees GAVIN. She takes off her headphones.
GAVIN
Would you like some candy?
KYLA's eyes light up, but then he studies GAVIN more closely, and looks uneasy.
KYLA
I don't know, you look kind of scary.
GAVIN
Me? No. I'm not scary. I’m the least scary dragon in the world.
KYLA
Wait, you're a dragon?
KYLA runs away, screaming.
EXT. A SUPERMARKET - PRESENT DAY
GAVIN
You were a coward then, and you are a coward now.
LELAND
(To KYLA) You ran away?
KYLA
(To LELAND) I was a young child. What was I supposed to do?
KYLA turns to GAVIN.
KYLA
I may have run away from you then, but I won't run away this time!
KYLA runs away.
She turns back and shouts.
KYLA
I mean, I am running away, but I'll be back - with swords.
GAVIN
I'm not scared of you.
KYLA
You should be.
EXT. A LIBRARY - LATER THAT DAY
KYLA and LELAND walk around searching for something.
KYLA
I feel sure I left my swords somewhere around here.
LELAND
Are you sure? It does seem like an odd place to keep deadly swords.
KYLA
You know nothing Leland ....
LELAND
We've been searching for ages. I really don't think they're here.
Suddenly, GAVIN appears, holding a pair of swords.
GAVIN
Looking for something?
LELAND
Crikey, Kyla, he's got your swords.
KYLA
Tell me something I don't already know!
LELAND
The earth's circumference at the equator is about 40,075 km.
KYLA
I know that already!
LELAND
I…love…you…
GAVIN
(appalled) Dude!
While GAVIN is looking at LELAND with disgust, KYLA lunges forward and grabs her deadly swords. She wields them, triumphantly.
KYLA
Prepare to die, you snotty sprout!
GAVIN
No please! All I did was eat a bunch of children!
DAMIEN enters, unseen by any of the others.
KYLA
I cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour! Those children were defenceless! Well now they have a defender - and that's me! Kyla ... defender of innocent children.
GAVIN
Don't hurt me! Please!
KYLA
Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t cut you head off right now!
GAVIN
Because Kyla, I am your best friend.
KYLA looks stunned for a few moments, but then collects herself.
KYLA
No you're not!
GAVIN
Ah well, it had to be worth a try.
GAVIN tries to grab the swords but KYLA dodges out of the way.
KYLA
Who’s the coward now? Huh? Huh?
Unexpectedly, GAVIN slumps to the ground.
LELAND
Did he just faint?
KYLA
I think so. Well that's disappointing. I was rather hoping for a more dramatic conclusion, involving my deadly swords.
KYLA crouches over GAVIN's body.
LELAND
Be careful, Kyla. It could be a trick.
KYLA
No, it's not a trick. It appears that... It would seem... Gavin … is dead!
KYLA
What?
KYLA
Yes, it appears that I scared him to death.
LELAND claps his hands.
LELAND
So your swords did save the day, after all.
DAMIEN steps forward.
DAMIEN
Is it true? Did you kill the evil dragon?
KYLA
Damien how long have you been...?
DAMIEN puts his arm around KYLA.
DAMIEN
Long enough.
KYLA
Then you saw it for yourself. I killed Gavin ….
DAMIEN
Then the children are safe?
KYLA
It does seem that way!
A crowd of vulnerable children enter, looking relived.
DAMIEN
You are their hero.
The children bow to KYLA.
KYLA
There is no need to bow to me. I seek no worship. The knowledge that Gavin … will never eat children ever again, is enough for me.
DAMIEN
You are humble as well as brave!
One of the children named, Izzy Hodgkins, passes KYLA a mystical ring
DAMIEN
I think they want you to have it, as a symbol of their gratitude.
KYLA
I couldn't possibly.
Pause.
KYLA
Well, if you insist.
KYLA takes the ring.
KYLA
Thank you.
The children bow their heads once more, and leave.
KYLA turns to DAMIEN.
KYLA
Does this mean you want me back?
DAMIEN
Oh, Kyla, of course I want you back!
KYLA smiles for a few seconds, but then looks defiant.
KYLA
Well you can't have me.
DAMIEN
WHAT?
KYLA
You had no faith in me. You had to see me scare a dragon to death before you would believe in me. I don't want a lover like that.
DAMIEN
But...
KYLA
Please leave. I want to spend time with the one person who stayed with me through thick and thin - my best friend, LEland.
LELAND grins.
DAMIEN
But...
LELAND
You heard the lady. Now be off with you. Skidaddle! Shoo!
DAMIEN
KYla?
KYLA
I'm sorry Damien, but I think you should skidaddle.
DAMIEN leaves.
LELAND turns to KYLA.
LELAND
Did you mean that? You know ... that I'm your best friend?
KYLA
Of course you are!
The two walk off arm in arm.
Suddenly LELAND stops.
LELAND
When I said I…love…you…, you know I was just trying to distract the dragon don't you?
