Prologue

ICARUS

She came trotting about to me, and for a split second, everything felt like a hoax. Too surreal. The last time, I thought that’d be it. She didn’t look any different from the last time I saw her, which was two months ago. She looked radiant, wearing the most ridiculous maxi top which looked more like a hospital gown on her petite frame. Her hair was shorter, as I had expected. I see her habit of cutting her hair hasn’t gone, she literally could not keep her hair on. She had that same smile on her face, the one she gave me before she left me shattered and crying in the middle of the fucking street. Then again, I saw a sliver of hope in her smile, unlike last time.

I took one gentle stride towards her. She handed me something. I stared at the painting that was now in my hands, it portrayed two hands that are being separated. My fingers grazed the space between the hands involuntarily, thinking how the universe has such a fucked up way of keeping people apart.

“Hi. I hope you like your birthday gift.“, she interrupted my depressing train of thoughts.

“Thank you.“, I shakily replied, still confused as to why she was here.

We both sat down on a bench and waited for the other to speak. When it was getting too uncomfortable in the silence, I ask her, “Why are you here?”

“To give you your gift.” she replies. Please.

“Why are you really here Savvy?”

I could see her struggling with all the reasons she shouldn’t be here. I patiently wait for her answer. When she still doesn’t reply, I ask her, “Why did you leave?”

I could see her on the brink of tears.
