Sally's Squeak (Flash Fiction)

Sally appeared exactly how one would imagine a five year old girl named "Sally" would look like. She was surprisingly small. She had her dark hair in pigtails; and she wore glasses, which was unusually early for her age. The glasses made her eyes look quite large, like a bug. Little did the people who saw her know, she was a little spitfire. Sally would wrestle with her older brothers when they picked on her, thus learnt how to stand up for herself. Their parents often pulled them apart as Sally kicked and screamed like a banshee. Therefore, when she saw another girl getting picked on by a slightly older boy on the playground, she decided to do something.

Sally looked around the crowded playground, checking if any of the teachers supervising noticed the occurrence. Unfortunately, all the adults were distracted by the other children. She then looked back at the boy and girl. They stood at the corner of the playground, away from the swings and the slide. The boy used a chunky hand to pull on the girl’s long hair harshly. Then, they exchanged words that Sally could not hear from where she stood. A red rubber ball was clutched tightly in the girl’s arms. Sally marched towards them, pushing past other kids who got in her way.

“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” a random kid berated her.

Sally ignored him and continued walking. She stood in front of the two.

Hey, you big fat meanie! Leave her alone!” Sally demanded bravely. The two turned to look at her in unison. Sally could see tears formed in the other girl’s eyes.

“Who are you and why are you here? Go away, you ugly poopy head! Stick your nose elsewhere,” the boy sneered disdainfully at Sally. He then turned back toward the other girl and pushed her down.

“Gimme the ball! You’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s my turn,” he commanded harshly.

Sally quickly moved in between them and pushed the boy down. Before Sally could utter a word, the girl spoke.

“You were playing with it earlier and you had it longer than me. It’s my turn!” the girl cried back at him and stood. Her legs were slightly scratched from the fall.

“You’re such a big fat meanie. No one likes you. Go play somewhere else,” Sally added, supporting her. The boy got up and spat on Sally’s face and kicked the other girl on the shin. Immediately, the other girl dropped the ball and ran at the boy, shrieking. Sally quickly wiped the saliva off her face and joined the scuffle. The other girl hovered over the boy, who squirmed on the ground, scratching at him as he tried to push her away. As he did so, Sally decided to take a seat on what she deemed her throne, which was undoubtedly, the boy’s forehead.

Abruptly, the boy drew back one of his beefy arms and punched Sally in the gut. Sally squeaks in surprise.

PFFT!

The three children froze as an ill smelling fart began to fill the air. The boy’s loud wails shifted the typical mood of the playground. It captured everyone’s attention. Teachers came running towards the commotion and the three children were quickly separated. A teacher pulled the boy to the side and attempted to calm him down. The other children watched as the teachers intervened.

Soon after, everyone explained their side of the story. The children were scolded appropriately and made to apologize to one another.

However, despite the apologies, the boy glared at the girls hatefully. The girls stared back, unfazed. Begrudged, he walked away from the two of them. The girls looked at each other simultaneously, with identical grins plastered on their faces. They began to laugh hysterically. It was at this moment that a beautiful friendship that would last a lifetime began to take shape.
