Many a young German child grew up recoiling at the tales in Der Struwwelpeter, a children's book published in the late 19th century depicting harsh (and deadly) punishments for typical childhood misbehaviors. Peter knows the stories well. Do they shape the way tragedies are manifest in his life? All Peter knows is that death follows him. The tragedies that befall he and his "friends" make the original children's book look tame.
