Teller

I woke up to the sound of horses and carts going past my window. The village was very excited because today was the day that marked fourty years of no tellers. Personally I’m not excited at all, After all I am a teller. My mother is the same way.

I could see childeren kicking a ball around in the town square, music was playing and people were dancing. The market was crowed with people from all over the place. People from the ice lands and the fire nation was here to of course. Even the water benders were here, not many but some.

God I wish I could go outside, I’ve been in the same house for almost sixteen years. We never go outside, not even my mother. We have a close friend that brings us things that we need during the night. If the royal family ever found out I was here I couldn’t imagine what would happen to us.

I looked over the ledge of the small dug out window and saw guards patrolling. I find it funny that’s it’s been so long and these idiots still haven’t found me. Out of the corner of my eye the prince catches my eye. His jet black hair and amber eyes make him easy to see. I tell mother about how I wished he was teller to so maybe I’d be able to meet him myself. I don’t have any friends because I’m a teller, the world is punishing me for something that I honestly can’t control.

My mother walked into the small room that I occupied.

“Linka! Get down from the window. The guards will see you”. she yelled

“Calm down mom, they haven’t seen me since I was born. They won’t just look now”. I explained

“I’m sorry, it’s just you know what they would do if they found you”.

“Yes mom” I looked down.

“Linka I’ve made a decision and I feel now that I can trust you enough to have some sense”

My eyes widened “ouside!”

“Yes hun, outside” she laughed

Finally I’m going to be able to be around everyone. Feel the grass under my toes and the wind swirling around my body. My mother gave me a hooded coat so people couldn’t see my eyes. All tellers have black eyes. I’ve heard some describe it as looking into hell.

I put the coat on and some lose shorts with a t-shirt as well. I opened the back door of our small shack. The sun beamed down onto my face, I couldn’t help but smile. Remember moms rules. I repeated “don’t stare” in my head as I was walking until I saw him. The prince.

Girls were all around him as he was dancing with other members of the village. He didn’t seem to pay much attention to any of them, just focused the the rythem of the music. I found myself in a daze not paying attention when a older women ran into me.

“I’m sorry dear, can’t see as well as I used to”.

“Oh uh— no worries”

“ I see you looking at Arthur over there” she nudged my shoulder.

“Who?”I asked.

“The prince, young lady are you not from around here? Everyone knows the prince”. She questioned

“My bad, I’m from the...” I looked around desperately for members of another nation close by.

“Young lady, are you lost?”.

“No, I’m from the fire nation”.

“Makes sense, your kind doesn’t visit often”

“Not at all” I forced a laugh.

The old lady walked away after trying to have a conversation with me about the royal family. I had no interest so I didn’t mind that she left me alone. I looked up to see because the big hood was blocking my view. There is so many bright colours and so many things to look at. Town square had so much to do.

I started to dance with some of the younger childeren that seemed to not question me at all. I got handed baskets of celebration foods and got ribbons for your clothes. I must have gotten to caught up in everything because it was getting dark already.

As I was leaving a gust a wind came and made my hood fall to my back. In a panic I pulled it back up quickly and ran away from town square. When I finally looked back I saw the prince staring right at me. I couldn’t help but stare back. His eyes so bright unlike mine captivated me. I looked away after I snapped out of it realizing what I had just done. I stared, he saw my eyes.
