“Momma, I want a baby.”

He demands it stubbornly, pouting as he folds his arms across his tiny chest and turns his face away. He doesn’t want to see his momma’s face—because he already knows she’s going to say no.

“Naman, baby, don’t be a bad boy,” she says softly, trying to make him understand. “Momma can’t give you a baby.”

“But why, Momma?” His voice trembles. “Aneel has a baby girl. Ali has a baby brother. All my friends have babies at home to play with. Only me… I don’t have a baby sister or brother.”

His lips quiver as tears spill from his eyes, and he rubs one eye with his tiny fingers.

“I understand, bacha,” she says, sinking down on her knees in front of him as he sits on the chair. “But I really can’t give you a baby.”

“Momma, please,” he begs, his teary eyes looking straight into her soul.

She shakes her head.

“You don’t love me,” he cries. “You hate me. Aunt Sophie was right… You’re not my momma.”

Smack.

A sharp sound fills the room as his tiny chubby cheek jerks to the side.

“Shut up! What are you saying?”an angry man roars, his eyes blazing with fury, nostrils flaring.

“Manik!”she screams, pulling the child into her arms and hugging him tightly.

“Don’t cry, bacha,” she whispers, kissing his head again and again.

“Da… dadda doesn’t love me either,” he sobs, pushing himself out of her embrace. “No one loves me.”And before anyone can stop him, he runs out of the house.

“Why did you slap him?” she asks, standing up and glaring at Manik.

“Didn’t you hear what he said?” he snaps, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “He said you’re not his momma!”

“So?” Her voice breaks. “Was he wrong?”

Her throat tightens. “I… I’m not his momma. I’m not.”

“But you are!” he groans and storms out of the kitchen, leaving the breakfast untouched.

“Mani…” she whispers, collapsing onto the chair, her hands clutching her head.

And with it, a past they’ve buried begins to rise.
