PROLOGUE
“Hello mom?” I answered my phone.
“Sof! I thought you’ll be here Canada today?! God!we look like fools here at the airport waiting for nothing!” I giggled after hearing that. Yes, I lied to them.
“Mom, please understand me. Will you? I will come back there soon. I promise.” I said sincerely, well.. not that sincere.. nah I don’t no!
“Goodness Soffare Eliza! When?! You always tell us that! ‘I’ll come back’ ‘Maybe next month mom.’ Yeah sure it will be next week.’ But what happened? You’re still there in Philippines! You lying brat!” I can’t help but to laugh, see that? She’s mocking me!
“Mom... I don’t know if I will go back...” I but my lower lip trying to stop my tears from falling. When I’m starting this topic I can’t help but to remember everything...
“W-What do you mean dear?” She asked worriedly.
“You know what I mean mom.”
“Oh yeah..” I heard her sigh. “I understand you my dear. But please... let yourself heal. It’s been a years and you should move on anak.”
[ANAK- a Filipino word means son/daughter.]
“Thanks mom.”
That’s how our conversation ended. I went to mall after that to meet my friends.
Days passed by normally. I worked as a doctor in a big hospital here in Manila. I love my work so as the place. I was born and raise here in Philippines and I can say that this place is my comfort. But to tell you honestly... after I left Canada and return here in my country... something in myself is missing. I don’t know why... or maybe I knew it but I choose to deny it. You can’t blame me it hurt.
“Hay! Finally! We’re done!” I smiled to my bestfriend Camilla as we exit the operating room. She’s a nurse here.
“You did a great job again Sof! Galing! You’re the best doctor.” She giggled.
[MAGALING/GALING- a Filipino word means great.]
“Stop teasing me Camilla!” I rolled my eyes making her laugh more.
“Ehh so humble! HAHAHAH!”
“Shut up!” I rolled my eyes again.
My phone vibrated so I immediately pick it up.
“Wait a minute.” I said to Camilla and answered the call. It’s from my mom.
“Hey mom!”
My smile faded when she didn’t answer back. Only I can hear her sobbings.
“MOM! WHAT HAPPENED? Are you alright?” I started to feel nervous. Mom does not usually cry, but now..
“S-Sof... your father.. he’s sent in the hospital..” My eyes widened after hearing that. I even almost dropped my phone in shock. It can’t be! His Adrenocortical carcinoma strikes again. I can’t help but to cry while listening to my mom.
After that call I immediately book a flight to Canada, good thing that I have a friend who owns a traveling agency, and went to my apartment to pack my things.
I can’t lost my father!
I also received call from Camilla and I told her everything while driving through the airport.
“Okay. Please take care Sof okay? Everything will be okay.” She said.
As soon as I arrived I entered immediately. I can’t waste my time. I don’t even know if I can still see my father when I arrived there at Canada. But hey! Really Soffare?! Why are you thinking this? Of course you’ll still see your father! He’s a fighter! He’ll never leave you and your mom!
I was crying silently the whole time I was riding the airplain. I can’t think straight. All I can think is all the possibilities that will happen to my father and I hated myself for thinking negatively.
The plane finally landed. I’m finally here... at Canada. And there! My heartbeat stopped beating as I realized one thing... he’s here at Canada...
