THE LAST SIP

"Oh my God! We are late!" Mr.cruel is not going to let us in." Diya spoke up.

"Shit! Are you trying to tell me that we have to attend this stupid school assembly?" Diya's friend Madhu queried.

"Come on! Let's try."

They had chess practice every morning and evening. Most students in this school considered this morning practice as their only way to escape from the daily school assembly, where the students had to stand there at least for half an hour. They didn't care if the students were standing when the hot sun was right over their head or cold mist, wind or fog froze them to death. But the teachers stood in the shade of the nearby classroom and the headmaster stood on the stage which had a wonderful roof that protected them from all weather.

Cruel right?

So some students in this school practised chess so that they can escape from the assembly.

Diya and Madhu rushed into the room full of students. Some were busy with table tennis while most of them were busy with chess.

The teacher of a crackhead was busy speaking with some students for no specific reason.

Dumb right, they are supposed to be practising but he is least bothered about improving their skill.

There was a chessboard with coins scattered around the board. It clearly signified that there were kids who started a game and left in between.

Madhu and Diya sat there and arranged the coins while three senior boys came towards them.

"This is our place, a guy spoke while arrogance radiated from his voice."

Madhu got up from that table while Diya kept looking for something.

"Come on Diya, what are you looking for?" Madhu told her cautiously.

"Umm...what's your name?" She questioned.

"Rahul." The arrogant guy replied.

"And your names?" She questioned.

Hrithik." The other guy replied.

"As if you don't know my name" the third guy replied.

His name was Krish. He was Diya's van mate right from her third grade.

Diya smirked at him and spoke to Madhu.

"Okay then, sit down Madhu."

"Excuse me!" Rahul exclaimed.

"Yes! How can I help you?" Diya replied mockingly.

"I told you that this is our place."

"My bad! I can't find your names anywhere. So this is a public place where anyone can sit right?" She smirked as she spoke.

"How dare you! I am elder than you!" Rahul raised his voice.

Poor him! He does not know that Diya can put the entire school to silence in one attempt of raising her voice.

"That does not give you the right to boss me around" she replied vigorously.

As vigorous as a piece of sodium when exposed to the normal atmosphere or as vigorous as hydrochloric acid.

"Okay, guys relax. We can play together. A group match. I accept we are three in number, but this is not an international match, right? Come on! Let's have fun."

Woah! What an intelligent solution. It was Rahul's friend,

Krish.

Maybe this is going to be the last time that he actually made use of his brain.

They continued playing chess while Diya and Madhu won a match.

They started the next match and kept playing. The situation seemed favourable for Madhu and Diya...

They almost won the match when,

"Children, the assembly is about to get over, please leave." The teacher yelled.

Nutcase, he has the worst timings.

"So let's consider that we won the match," Krish spoke up.

"What do you think of yourself huh? You've lost most of your powers while we have all of our powers with us including both of our knights.

"You should learn to accept your failure Lil gurl, after all, failures are the stepping stone for success," Krish replied with sarcasm

.

"Lil gurl? Seriously?" Diya questioned.

The other two guys chuckled This boasted Krish's ego.

Diya rearranged the board while she kept speaking.

"This evening, one to one, you win, I'll help you with anything if I win you have to do me a favour, more like a slave." She said emphasizing the word slave.

With that being said, she flipped her hair and walked out dramatically while everyone stared at her as if she has grown two heads.

The rest of the day went on peacefully. The usual classes, jokes, fun, gossips and all those high school dramas.

The evening arrived.

The school bell rang signalled the students to leave.

All students packed their bags and ran towards the main gate while Diya ran towards the chess class.

For the first time and forever...

Forgive me, I am exaggerating. It should be for the first time and never after... she was the first person in the chess class.

Mr Crackhead (the coach) was late, as usual. Diya requested Madhu to find him and get the keys from him. Madhu accepted her request and went towards the gent's staff room.

Twenty minutes later...

Diya and Krish were sitting across the other person.

White's move first,

Diya moved her pawn, two steps forward.

Krish moved his pawn.

Both of them gave their undiverted concentration.

Both of them were equally good.

Each and every move was adding more spice to the game.

They kept playing in silence for almost an hour. The practice was about the get over.

It was the deciding point of the game. Both of them had equal opportunities to win.

Krish let his bishop strike Diya's queen.

Diya looked nervous, she was almost panting. She placed her thumb finger and her index finger on a tiny white pawn and made a move.

That made her...
