''I am coming at your place,we have to leave.'' Mavra said in a commanding tone, standing hovered in the passage of her house with a cell phone. ''Okay, I am waiting,'' Rohit replied politely and hung up. She locked the door behind her and went to grab her scooty carelessly parked in one corner. Mavra was a reporter, a rather very diligent reporter. She was tall, with a fit built body, olive skin and long wavy hair, which was mostly covered by hijab. Since five years, Mavra has been in this profession. She loved her job, her adventurous personality always led her seniors to provide her with the toughest areas to report from. Today she has to report from Kandagir where a communal riot has broken. Her camera person Rohit is to accompany her. They have been working together since day one and now have already started imitating each other's likes and dislikes.
After driving for 15 minutes, she stopped in front of an old looking apartment and looked around to find Rohit but she couldn't, slightly irritated by his absence, she texted him, "you are always rate! Come down soon, I'm waiting!" She said agitatively. "Just five more minutes, I have to offer water to suryadev" he said playfully, scrunching his nose.
After exactly five minutes, she could seem Rohit standing in his small corridor, pouring water towards the beaming sunlight. He was tall, skinny with curly hair which was always scrunched to his scalp. Mavra could still remember how she used to mock his always tired looking face. She looked in the mirror of her scooty meanwhile noticing him. All of a sudden their eyes met and she smiled awkwardly. Although hailing from two totally different religions and cultures, they understood each other's differences and respected it.
Rohit came running hastly and sat behind her on her scooty. She handed him the helmet and he took it, suddenly glad for it. This felt like an everday task to both of them, Mavra driving with Rohit sitting at the back with a tripod.
"Thanks for waiting, where are we going today?" His voice filled with excitement. "Kandagir, a riot has broken over there. I've got the reports."she suddenly became sad, "You know, I am quite streesed right now, this is going to be the most dangerous cover of our entire career!" Rohit sensed her emotion but replied smiling, "Don't worry, we won't screw up, after all, why fear when Mavra is here!right?" He said grinning.
"Seriously Rohit!" Mavra rolled her eyes in annoynce and then both of them bursted into laughing. He always took care of her insecurities and she took care of his. Deep down in their hearts, they knew that the insanely beautiful chemistry between them was not just friendship, it was more than that. They knew that neither of them can live without teasing each other, laughing at each other, without each other but they refused to confess this feeling to each other, not even to themselves.
The scooty stopped. Mavra and Rohit looked around as if to digest the fact that the once happy town had now turned into a mortuary. A strange smell of burned tyre mixed with the smell of petrol filled the air of Kandagir. She made a hand gesture to Rohit to start recording.
"This is Mavra Rahman reporting from Kandagir. A huge riot has taken place here and the rioters have carried out mass destruction on a huge scale!" They roamed in the streets reporting every single detail. Soon they reached a round about. Now, they can hear people shouting slogans for a far. The sound increased gradually and very soon an immensely huge crowd appeared feom the left street. Some people among them were carrying fire sticks. They glared here as if searching for something and their eyes caught the sight of the two. Few men among them started discussing something and in the blink of eye, the crowd ran towards Mavra and Rohit. Mavra, too startled to figure out anything, opened her mouth ''Is it what I am thinking? Are they about to attack us?"
''Run Mavra!!!" Rohit scremed. He grabbed her hand and pulled her. They moved into a random street, objects were passing like ghosts, barely noticable. Mavra's lungs have now begun to ache. She stopped, bending down on her knees to gasp for some air.The crowd has now split into small groups to search for them. "Rohit, I can't run anymore!" she said looking in his eyes, "you...must..leave!"her voice was shivering. "No, I won't leave without you! You should....Oh my god!! "a huge bear bottle was shooting right towards her, "no!!!" It struck on her head with a thud and shattered into pieces,as she fell on the ground grabbing her head. For once, all the senses in her body stopped. She felt as if every vein in her head has exploded, tearing her skull, apart. Rohit looked at her in horror, suddenly his face has drained its colour. He grabbed her body like a small child. She winced in pain, unable to speak anything. Her entire Kurta was now blood red. ''You..should..leave'' she said. Tears rolled down his cheeks, and emotions flooded his heart. He could not hold back and hugged her. For a second, Rohit had almost forgot about his problem, his life, all he could think was their past. It was as if the hug had taken him to different place.
As he raised his eyes, he could see Mavra's hand gesturing towards her right. Too late. Too late. The crowd was now now an inch close to them. They grabbed her leg and pulled her towards themselves. Meanwhile, another person came from behind and kicked Rohit away from her. He punched and kicked but all in vein. The crowd now seemed to get bigger. They firmly held his hands almost tearing them apart, meanwhile somebody brought a boulder from somewhere and before Rohit could resist, a sharp pain suddenly rose at the back of his head. In utter shock he touched it with his fingures only to reveal blood. He fell down slouching on the ground. He had, now accepted his fate, and then the entire crowd of almost two hundred adults decided to kill one innocent boy. They started showering kicks upon kicks on him as he tried to protect himself by covering his face and head with his hands, rolling from one side to the other. They kept on thrashing and beating untill satisfied by the amount of blood on his body. He could feel the stinging pain in his chest. It seemed to get worse with every second. He screamed in agony. His body felt numb as his heart beat suddenly dropped. Breathing seemed heavy and every second felt a burden. And very soon, his voice disappeared. His breathing stopped. He has escaped the suffering.
"Please... leave me" Mavra stuttered. Tears flowing from her eyes. They grabbed her by hair from the back and threw her on the ground.
''I AM NOT A VICTIM!'' A voice which has now started to echo in her heart.
All of a sudden, she could feel strong. Stronger than all of them. She gathered all of her strength and managed to stand on her knees. Her mind raced in search of anything in between a gun or stick which could protect her. But it seemed that even her last bit of hope had been fading. Hopeless and defeated, she slouched. Dizziness has been swallowing her now that she has lost. Slowly and very slowly her eyes shut. The people grabbed her hand and threw her flying whilst her lifeless body dashed on a pillar and ''thud!'' No movement. No suffering. Complete silence. Silence which barked and roared. A child has been watching all of this from his tiny balcony. He stared blankly at both of them. His expression changed into disgust and he turned back and went inside.
