Brilliant!
"I highly recommend this story, especially if you enjoy a more archaic style of writing. For me, reading this story was almost like reading a long lost ancient manuscript. Yet, the style was not so dense and old that I didn't understand what was going on. It was the perfect blend of a modern and older style of writing that just made me smile happily. The prologue was a fantastic lead into the actual story and set the scene as well as giving important back story details in a unique and interesting way. It's difficult to make a story about King Arthur unique and interesting simply because there are just so many of them out there. The Legend of the Emerald Rose, so far, manages it wonderfully. I enjoyed the blend of old characters along with the introduction of new in the first chapter. It was gripping and devastating at the same time. All I can really say is that I can't wait to read more!"
Arthur Lives (or dies) again!
"I have nothing but praise for this imaginative retelling of the Arthur myth, which starts off (well, in Ch.2, anyway) with the horrifying moment of Arthur's death. However, before getting there, we get a wonderful frame story of a bard telling history to a group of youths, and slowly drawing them into the tale. This time-worn device is a brilliant touch since it not only invokes a sense of epic, but also ties this story in with the grand tradition of tale-telling from which Arthur and his knights emerge. I also like the shift in dialogue and tone from Ch.1 (the frame) to Ch..2 (the story): the first is a bit archaic, in keeping with the sense of an older time telling even older tales. Yet when the tale begins, it sounds and feels 'modern'--the way it would feel if we were there, experiencing these events themselves. For no tale truly feels old if we believe in it, and tales of King Arthur least of all. The battle of Ch.2 is exciting and full-blooded, as is the lament for Arthur's death. Familiar characters are introduced and the author is quite skillful in blending tradition with fantasy without sounding pedantic. Though we only have two chapters, this is a wonderful start to what I assume will be an original take on Arthur's mythos. Long live the king!"
