Chapter 1
"FUCK!" I screamed. "Why does everything bad happen to me?"
Screw it, I'll just change in a motel. Town after town passed me. I just kept on driving. Soon it just became trees and there was nothing in front me but the straight road. Now left with nothing but my thoughts, it all came crashing down to me.
"Jack, are you ok? " I asked as I went further into the apartment.
I didn't get an answer. I turned the corner to his kitchen and saw Jack with a blonde...not just any blonde, my secretary on the kitchen island.
"What the fuck are you doing?" I screamed.
They both quickly tried to cover themselves and were both stumbling out excuses. I threw the bottle at Jack and left. I didn't know what I was feeling. All I knew was that I had to get out.
"Natalie wait! I can explain!" Jack called out.
That was the last thing I heard before running back out into the cold night air.
My car then sputtered and slowed to a stop. Crap. There's smoke billowing out from under the hood. I took out my phone and cursed some more. My subconscious has led me closer to my past than I thought. With a sigh, I called the one number I haven't called or even given a thought in 10 years.
Looking at the man next to me, it just seemed like he hasn't changed at all. Well except for all the grey hairs now and there's more lines around his face. But he still had the same kind eyes.
"I'm good. I am surprised you called though. It was the last thing I expected," he said. "What about you?"
That was my dad, he hated beating around the bush and will get to the point at the fastest route possible.
"I'm ok," I mumbled. "Could be better. How's mum?"
"She's good. She can't wait to see you," he said. "Oh and don't worry about your car. We'll have someone tow it tomorrow!"
I sighed and stared out the window. It was all becoming familiar again.
"What happened?" My dad asked. "And what are you wearing?"
"I don't want to talk about it just yet," I said as I blushed, just remembering what I was wearing. I moved the trench coat to cover myself up more. He nodded. We drove in silence. But I swear I heard a faint howl in the distance. Soon my childhood home came into view. I didn't realize how nervous I was until we parked in the driveway. My mother was at the front, in her robe. Waiting. As soon as she got out, she ran and hugged me.
"Are you ok? When you called, we got so scared. We haven't heard from you in so long, and then...you sounded like you were crying. Will you be here for long? Can you stay for longer than a week?" she said.
I couldn't even get a word in.
"I'm ok mum!" I said. "I didn't even realize I was coming this way until my car broke down."
"Oh," she said with disappointment.
I knew she was secretly hoping I was returning back home. But she knew as well as I did, that living in a small town would not help with the career I wanted. We were ushered inside by dad. Nothing has changed. Everything looked exactly the same.
"I've already set up your room, so you can have a rest," mum said.
"Thank you," I said. "I might turn in. It's been a full on day already."
"Yes of course honey!" mum said. "We'll see you in the morning!"
She gave me a hug, one I didn't realize I have missed and my dad just patted me on the back. This felt like home.
