Chapter I

It’s too loud in here. I want to go hide in a corner that’s far away from here. But I restrain myself from getting up and running away from this place. “Niel, can you please show Sam around?”, the Alpha asks. Swallowing my needs to get up and run, I respond as calm and politely as I can.

“Yes Alpha. Please follow me, Alpha Sam.” Leading the way while slightly bowing my head, I show him where every room he may need to go is at. Before showing him to his room I take him to my house. “And this is my house. If you ever need something or aren’t sure where everything is, you can come ask me for help if you want.” Before leaving I wait for him to say something. When he doesn’t say anything, I head off again to show him his room.

“And this is where you’ll be staying. If the room doesn’t suit you, we can arrange another room for you to stay in.”, I say in my best tour guide voice, “Hope you have a good rest here sir.” And with that I walk away carefully so that when he calls me back, like what most alphas do, I can just rush back to him and apologize for my behavior. I’m about ten feet away and when I don’t hear any protests from him, I start to walk faster.

Sighing now that I’m finally out of the pack house, I shift into my wolf form and head for the forest. My wolf only stands to be about 4ft 6inches tall which is smaller than the average werewolves which is about 5ft 6inches to 6ft., so I’m considered a runt. But still, my wolf never fails to amaze me. His patterns are really uncommon, he is mostly black with white paws, making it seem like he is wearing socks. The tip of his right ear is also white. But what makes it even better is that he has big white circles over his eyes which make it seem like he is wearing glasses. And it’s kinda cute because I like to wear glasses even though I don’t need them.

“Nate, where are we going?”, I ask my wolf.

“We are going to see mom remember.”

“Oh yeah let’s hurry up so we won’t worry dad.”

“Okay.”

And with that, we speed to mom’s grave. She was buried in a flower field and I would go here throughout the day to feel closer to her. I never met her alive since she died when giving birth to me. But my father would tell me stories about her. With the little information given to me about her, it feels as though I was witnessing the stories myself.

I heard she was so gentle and kind that even the alpha wanted her as his mate. But she met my father in this flower field and from there, there was a huge fight that lasted weeks. But eventually, the alpha found his mate and my parents became good friends since then. What surprised me was that no one had any grudges on each other after this whole fight over my mother. “Niel, come on time to go home.”, my father’s voice rings through my head..

“Okay, be right there dad.”

“Nate lets go, dad is calling.”

“Okay.”

We rushed off towards our house and ended up bumping into Alpha Sam halfway there. “Have you seen a beta wolf named Niel little pup?”, he asked me. Well technically he asked Nate since I’m still in wolf form. Nate snickered as he led the Alpha to our house. When we made it there, Nate left the Alpha in front of our house and went behind a tree so I could shift back.

“You called for me Alpha Sam?”, I asked as formally as I could without laughing my ass off. I swear he has the most priceless face expression ever on his face right now. He looks like a kid who just realized that his mother tricked him into doing something he didn’t want to do. Alpha’s are the most funny yet cringiest wolves ever. But it’s only when they let their guards down.

“Oh, uh, yeah. I wanted to know where everyone was because there was no one in the kitchen.”

“Oh, sorry but I’m the one who usually runs the kitchen at night. But I had to go somewhere first. Do you want a midnight snack or something?”

“Yeah, do you have cake?”

“Yeah, let me just see what my dad wanted and I’ll bring it to your room.” And with that he retreated back to the pack house. What a weird alpha. More importantly, that was the weirdest conversation I ever had with an alpha. Actually scratch that, it was the only conversation I’ve had with anyone besides my dad and Uncle Mike (the alpha who had a crush on my mom). Oh, right dad wanted me. Walking into the empty house, I announce my presence.

“Niel, what time are you going to go to sleep tonight?”, asks my dad.

“Around 11, why?”

“Because your mom is coming tomorrow, remember?”

“Oh, right I almost forgot that tomorrow is my birthday.” Every year on my birthday, me and dad go to mom’s grave, sometimes Uncle Mike too. It’s the only time we actually get to spend time with her as a family without worrying about my problems. So I usually excuse myself from school and just spend the entire day with my family.

I promised my dad to come back as soon as possible and left to go make the weirdo alpha his cake. Oh shit, I forgot to ask him what flavor. Let’s just hope he likes strawberries.

1 hour later...

“Alpha Sam, I got your cake.”

“Uh, just leave it by the door please.”

“Okay. If you need anything else you know where I’m at sir.”

And just like that, I left and went straight home. At least that was less awkward. Wait, what time is it? Okay, it’s only 11. Time to go to bed then. But first I need to prepare. Lets see… warm milk, check... favorite blanket, check... a warm house, check... and my favorite spot prepped with my favorite book beside it, check. Okay, now I’m ready for bed.

I usually have a hard time sleeping, especially on the nights before my birthday. I roll over reading my favorite book for the hundredth time while wrapped in my favorite blanket. At a reasonable time, I close my book and turn off a light beside me.

1:00 am

Why can’t I fucking sleep! How is it so hard to sleep right now? I did my usual ritual correctly but I can’t sleep. I look hard at the empty glass and ponder what step I’m missing. Oh, I forgot to get dad. “Hey dad can you sing me to sleep please?”, I yell in my empty house. “Please, I just need to hear your voice once more.” And pretty soon an angelic male voice rings throughout the house. My eyes get heavy halfway through the song and then darkness.

Morning…

It’s my birthday! I gotta get ready to see mommy! I wanna look just like her. I mean I already have all of her features, like her golden eyes, her curly, pale blonde hair, and her soft round face. But I wanna look like her boy twin so I put on her favorite jacket dad gave me. And I matched it with my favorite pair of jeans. Pulling the outfit together with my favorite pair of shoes. “Dad, I’m ready to go, come on I don’t wanna be late.”

“It’s not like she’s gonna leave us, but come on, let’s go.”

On my way to see my mom, I ran into the weirdo Alpha. “Hey, Niel, are you going to school?”, he asks. See why I call him the weirdo Alpha? He is literally too nice. What’s he tryna pull? Imma just play along until I find his motive. “No, sir. I’m actually going to visit my mom with my dad.” I don’t really care what people say or think. My father is here with me and that’s that.

“Um, where is your father?” Ha! I knew he was gonna ask that but again I don’t really care if he thinks that I’m crazy.

“He’s right here next to me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Hi sir, how are you today?”

What the fuck? I thought he would say there was no one there. “He said that he is fine.”, I say, trying to hold back a shocked expression.

“Who’s your friend Niel? He seems to know you well. Are you guys going out?”, my dad asks. I blush real hard at the last question and try hard not to push my dad away.

“Well, excuse us Alpha Sam. We don’t want to be late with our visit.”, I say in a hurry and rush off. I am probably as red as a tomato right now. Dad, he is not my boyfriend okay. I was assigned to watch after him because his pack is staying here for a few months and everyone gets a tour guide. And I just so happen to be the future Alpha’s tour guide. My dad nods his head in understanding at my mental explanation with a silly smirk on his face.

I turn my head towards our destination and see the person who I wanted to see most of all. Without a thought, I ran towards my mom and hugged her like she would disappear at this very moment. “I missed you so much mommy.”, I whispered.

“My son, I missed you too. You have grown into a beautiful young man.”, she says. Her voice never fails to calm me down. This moment reminds me of when I first met her. I was only 4yrs old when my father had decided to take me to see my mom’s grave when he was still alive. That day also happened to be my birthday so when I saw a lady who looked like my mom in the many pictures my dad had shown me I knew it was her. Without a thought, 4yr old me yelled ‘mommy’ and ran towards the lady. My dad soon figured out that I could see the dead. I knew too, but I just didn’t bother with the other spirits since I didn’t know them enough to talk to them.

“But mommy, I’m still the same size as last year. I didn’t grow as much.” It might sound exaggerated but it’s true. I am only 17 and I haven’t grown since I was 14. That’s pretty early for male wolves to stop growing. When it comes to height, I’m the average height for female wolves. I’m about 5’2 and most males my age are somewhere between 5’8 and 6ft. I might as well be a girl.

“I know, but you still are the most handsome person here. Besides your father.”

“Ouch that hurts. I’m not as handsome as I used to be. Even my own wife doubts my handsomeness.”, my dad dramatically cries out.

“Over dramatic, much dad.” I mentally roll my eyes. This is the only company I need today to get my mind off things. But to my dismay, the day had come to an end and I had to say goodbye. I could only see dead people on their death days, unless I have an emotional and personal connection with them.

Then that’ll allow me to see them more often. And the connection can be made whenever. Dead or alive, but only when I get attached. If I get attached to you when you’re alive, I can see you everyday. But getting attached to the dead and seeing them is a bit complicated.

The times I can see the dead after I made a connection is random. You can either see the dead twice a year, their death day and about a month after their death day, or you can see them whenever you want. Luckily for me, I can see my mom whenever but I only choose to see her when I need her the most.

“Dad, what do you think I should have for dinner tonight?”

“How about some take out?”

“Okay imma order take out then. Goodnight dad.”

“Goodnight Niel.”

I enter my house to find Uncle Mike waiting on my couch. Oh boy what the fuck does this he want now? I love him but sometimes he’s just a bit of an overprotective uncle/father, especially when it comes to me. Since my parents died he’s been doting on me as much as he does his kids. The dude literally makes me, a 17 year old boy, train with the pups.

I’m tired and hungry so I want to get this over with. “Yes uncle?” It’s good to start off simple so I won’t get bombarded with unnecessary things. “I want you to take Alpha Sam in.” My mouth drops. “There’s a simple reason why.”, he quickly adds. He knows what I’m gonna say, that’s why he said that. “What is the simple reason then?” Enlighten me Michelle.
