Chapter 1
I’m Katy. Just Katy. I live in California and go to West Side High School. And just in case you’re wondering, I’m not popular. At all. You can say that I didn’t get the best ticket for the genetic lottery. My entire maternal family’s side is obese, and I’m no exception.
My mother is not the best mom in the world. When I was little, I used to see other kids and their moms. They used to be so happy, always laughing together. When other kids used to get hurt and cry, their moms used to comfort them and buy them ice- cream. When I used to fall down, my mother would yank me up by the arm and tell me to walk without making a scene. Clearly, she lacked the maternal sixth sense most mothers have.
I needed braces when I was 10 years old, you didn’t need a dentist to see that. She wouldn’t take me anyway, “Waste of money, them doctors are.” she said. I never got those braces. I was called the ‘white bunny’ through middle school. Luckily, my teeth straightened out on the own.
I wasn’t like other girls. I never had a ‘normal’ childhood. The only normal experience I had was at the Grant household. With Joshua Grant.
Josh.
