Prologue
The blizzard of 2018 was one of the quickest and harshest storms to hit the small town of Masherlin Massachusetts, it took about an hour before the entire town was covered in snow. The mayor warned folks if they weren’t home, they needed to get home before the storm hit. No one knew how long it would take the plows to get the roads clear. This storm hit badly; street signs were no longer visible. Lights flicked on and off for the first twenty minutes of the storm before finally staying on, luckily.
Kiara Madden, a 17-year-old senior had everything she could ever want. A loving family that consisted of her mother Nicole Madden, her father Trevor Madden, her twin younger siblings Nick and Alyssa. Her father Trevor owns one of the largest oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Nicole Madden owns the busiest and most gossip-filled hair salons. The Madden family lived right on the edge of town in the old Madden family antebellum home that was built after the civil war by Kiara’s ancestors who helped soldiers recover when they came back from war. Kiara’s bedroom outlooked the pond that her mother taught her how to ice skate on when she was a young girl. She was surrounded by a large Italian family from both her mother and father’s side, meaning the dining room was filled with family on holidays, and those who lived close by would be over for the occasional Sunday dinner. She worked a few days after school helping her mother clean up the salon and calling clients for their next day appointments. When she wasn’t helping at the salon she was studying for college or running around town with her friends. Everything a normal teenager would do.
The local high school located right near the city hall was small consisting of only 150 students, all residents with family roots that dated back as far as Kiara Madden’s family. The town was small, and everyone knew everyone’s business, especially the woman. Nothing happened in town without the woman of Masherlin knowing about it shortly after.
Very little happened in town that would turn the town upside down, at least not until the Blizzard happened.
