–New Year's Eve–
"5....4....3....2....1! Happy New Year!!!" The crowd screamed and immediately found their partners. I turned and smiled at my partner, also my boyfriend, Elliot.
"Happy new year Eli bear" I whispered, my hands around his neck. He grinned in response and bent for a kiss which I eagerly responded to. Our lips met and I couldn't hold back the tears, my thoughts have been going haywire for a long while.
We'd been dating for 2 years and I was attending college off state. I needed to end things with him, even if I knew we could make it work,I just wasn't willing try.
"Are you okay?" He whispered, his thumbs gently wiping underneath my eyes, taking the tears away. I gave a fake smile and nodded. He narrowed his eyes in disbelief. He knew me too well to know I was lying so he held me by the hand and took me outside.
The new year's party was at my friend, Peyton's house. I did the interior decor and I was pretty proud of my work. Elliot sat on the arm chair at the back and guided me to his legs, making me sit. I leaned on him while he rubbed my back, muttering sweet nothings as I cried.
"Talk to me, Gia! What's wrong?" I sniffed and went silent for some time. Sitting up, I wiped my tears with the back of my sleeves and looked at him.
"I'm leaving the state for college-"
" I know that" He interrupted, staring back at me. "Is that what this is about? We can make it work Gia, it's just 3 hours away. I think we can both survive that"
I shook my head. I knew we could, but I just didn't want to try." I know we can survive it, but I don't want to. I want to be free, Elliot"
" I don't understand–"his voice cracked and he quickly cleared his throat. He gripped my waist, not tight to leave bruises buy tight to make me stay. "–what do you mean free? Are you confined when you're with me? I don't understand, Gia. Make me understand"
" I mean, I don't want to continue what we have. I love you Elliot, but I just need time and space. I... I just want to be–" I willed myself not to shed a tear,no matter how badly I wanted to. If I cried, I'd be weaker and so I got up and he followed .
" Please don't do this. Is this your way of breaking up with me? Did I do something? I can fix it. Please don't do this, anything but this Gia" I loved when he always puts my name at the end of every sentence when he talks to me.
"It's my way of breaking up with you, Elliot. You didn't do anything, you've been amazing, I found a bestfriend and a boyfriend in you. You're it for me, but I have to do this" My eyes widened as he dropped to his knees infront of me.
My heart beat escalated. No! No! No! I bent to make him get up. "Elliot,, don't do this. Get up, please"
"Gianna, I love you. And I'm begging you not to do this. Please, please don't leave me. I don't know if I'd be able to survive this, please. My heart is breaking here, Gia" I gulped. Blinking my tears away, I wasn't going to cry, no way.
"Don't say that, Elliot. I'm sorry, but this is something I need to do. I love you so much. I have to go" He quickly rushed up and hugged me from behind.
"Please" His voice cracked and I knew he was crying. I couldn't handle a crying Elliot. Everytime he cried, it broke me.
"Look at me" He said and I shook my head. He knew how little my resolve was. I just couldn't. He hugged me tight and I savored this moment for a little while longer. Gently raising my hands to his arms around me, I unclasped them.
"I'm sorry. Goodbye, Elliot"
That night, I walked away without looking back and without a tear drop till I reached the solace of my house. I didn't want the commitment in college. I just wanted to live the college life, free and happy.
I walked away, leaving the love of my life in tears. The feelings for Elliot were strong, I knew that the chances of falling out of love with him was close to none but I'd try.
It was good while it lasted.
