Chapter 1A: A New Mourning
I feel inclined to lay in bed for more time but I know that it’s impossible with the schedule I’m on. I rub my eyes and try to keep them open for as long as I can. The room is still dull, only being filled by a sun that has been mostly blocked by the long hanging cloths on the curtain hanger. I should move, I thought. The feeling of moving my leg was pain enough for me to stop in my tracks. I sigh out of reluctance. I don’t know how I’ll be able to run with this pain, I hope the council will understand...
I bandage up my leg and I get up from the bed I’m in. It’s creaky, almost like the sound of a fireplace cackling. I look around again and see my clothes neatly stacked with a note on top of the pile. I start to move to the desk where my clothes are but this pain is agony. I slowly stepped again snd feel ok to keep going. My body hurts everywhere and somehow I don’t get one day off. I even have vacation time for god sakes but no, I still have to go into work because “this mission is the most important out of anything in your life”... as if Chief. He always likes to make things bigger than they seem so I don’t expect much from this “important mission”
I put on my clothes that were on the pile and read the note. “Thanks for the dinner son, I made your clothes and I hope you stay safe” I smile. At least my family are doing good and did something sweet. Last night was a good time, we had a feast after I got a promotion at work. That’s insane. It’s the 2nd promotion of the year and it’s my second year in this job. It’s insane how much work and focus you put in one thing and how much you get out of it. Ah shit, almost forgot I had work, I thought.
I race to the kitchen to find dishes in the sink from last night being gone and some food on the table. I get the food and run out of the house. I can’t waist more time than I need. I get in the car but forgot my keys again, I go back in a get them. I seriously can’t even get myself in check. I put the key in ignition and I turn the car on. I sigh, and I drive to work, on this new morning.

I get to the building I’m supposed to go and I race it.
“Oh, hello Mark!” The receptionist says gleefully
“Hey, Jenna, I don’t have time! I’m almost gonna be late” I tell her. She laughed at my remark and I smile. That women has a good sense of humor
I press the elevator and I wait for it to come to the bottom floor. More people come by to come to the elevator and I heard someone call my name
“Mark, it’s nice to see you here. I heard that you were in an explosion and it took of your legs!” He states
“Henry, there was an explosion but my legs are fine but they hurt like hell if I walk too fast. It kinda sucks for what we’re working in” I laugh in reluctance. Today’s gonna be a bitch, I thought to myself
“You really got yourself in a pickle, you really need to be careful next time or things could be worse than sore knees.” Henry proclaims
He’s right about that, if it don’t choose safety over completion, I’ll be in a whole lot of trouble for myself. I don’t wanna decide if I complete the job or not... i think about what I’m gonna do if this mission will be difficult like the rest I’ve dealt with.
I hear the door of the elevator open and go in and press the 50th floor. The Chief expects me to be in good shape and have decent manners for this meeting. This is the first time going to the Chiefs flood, he always goes to a different floor to talk to people. This is serious, now that I think about it. All of this secrecy and him wanting to do this meeting on his floor means that this mission is to be confidential.
I don’t know if I should be scared or excited. Can it be both? Both scared and excited to see what awaits me in this mission. Excited to see what else there is for me but scared of what will happen to me if I fail. I could die, I could lose everything, I could be locked up. It’s all so scary but it’s so exciting to know the gambles of this mission.
