Him
Blake Royal had returned home after four years thinking she would be there alone, only to find someone there waiting for her. Kameron Void, the man who had haunted her dreams and every stray thought for the last five years, and just happened to be her father’s best friend since childhood. Sent by her parents to act as, essentially, a babysitter, even though she was now 18 and legally an adult, will Blake be able to ignore the feelings Kam brings out in her or will he realize the feelings that had lain dormant inside him?
Blake
“Finally, home,” I thought to myself as a pulled the U-Haul holding all of my stuff into the driveway of my childhood home. “too bad no one is here to greet me like usual,” I thought to myself as I hopped down from the truck. “stupid parents.” I thought before mentally slapping myself. It’s not their fault they aren’t they got called to Egypt so urgently. My parents were two of the most renowned archaeologists in the world, and apparently, they had just discovered some major tomb over there. “It’s their job, Blake,” I told myself. Oh well, that meant I had this huge ass house all to myself for the next 8 months.
I, Blake Royal, had just graduated from high school and was returning home “for the summer”. At least that’s what I told my parents. I was actually planning on taking a year off before starting college. I mean, why not? I had literally just left the school I had been away at for 4 years, only visiting for summer, and now I was finally home and, honestly, just wanted to be here for a while. Don’t get me wrong I would miss my friends, even though I would be seeing my best friend and soulmate later today, since she lived down the road from here, but still, I wanted to be home and relax.
“I’m so ready to just fall into bed,” I thought as I climbed the stairs to the front door while trying to juggle a suitcase and purse to pull out my keys. As I opened the door and stepped inside, a feeling of relief and the sense of calm that came with being home washed over me. This feeling, however, did not last long as I heard one of the deepest, sexiest voices I had ever heard in my 18 years of existing came from behind me. “You’re home early,” it said. The split second before I whipped around, I thought to myself, “I know this voice,” however I never would have expected to see him standing there. The man who had haunted my dreams since I was 13. The man I had had the hugest crush on for the last five years and the man my thoughts so often drifted to if I wasn’t careful. Kameron Void, my father’s best friend since childhood.
“W-w-what are you doing here, Kam?,” I managed to stammer out as my face turned blood red. “You aren’t supposed to be home for another day, B,” he said staring at my unblinking. The way he looked at me had always made me nervous, like he was watching my every move, but he also did that to everyone. “Well,” I said slightly miffed because this was, in fact, my house,” I decided to come home a day early. Not that that should concern you.” I watched him as her raised his eyebrow seemingly glaring at me for the attitude I put behind my response. “Watch yourself, B, “he said coolly. “I’m here at the request of your parents. They asked me to come watch the house and you and make sure you don’t destroy it or get yourself into any trouble,” he said as he brushed by me to grab my suitcase. “What are you doing with that,” I asked reaching out to take my suitcase back. “Taking it upstairs? I know you were about to leave it in the middle of the foyer,” he said matter-of-factly. “I was not! Give it,” I said grabbing it a little harshly. “Watch yourself, B,” he said glaring at me once again, “I’m not the one. You may get your way with your parents, Princess, but I won’t be so nice.”
Giving him my most haughty look, I stormed off upstairs. Why did everyone have to treat me like that? Just because I used to be a bitch and treat everyone like they were nothing, didn’t mean I hadn’t changed. Four years, ago I had been sent to the school I had just returned from, St. Agatha’s School for Girls. It was a prestigious private school, but it was also a very hard, no nonsense school. The teachers weren’t harsh but could be if warranted. I had gone there as a girl who thought the world owed her something and just because her parents had money, thought she was better than everyone else. But I learned through hard work, that everyone in this world was the same, some just got a head start on life because of the families they were born into. I had learned to appreciate my position and not look down on those trying to achieve what my parents had. My parents sometimes even treated me as a ticking time bomb. Not to say that I wouldn’t still hold my own and talk back to those who were being cruel or harsh to me, or stand up for my family or friends, but I didn’t go out of my way to be mean to other people any more. I had changed, though I was still insanely sarcastic, but I hoped people would start seeing that.
As I reached my room and chucked my suitcase down on my bed, I decided not to be mad or say anything to Kam because he wouldn’t know I had changed. We hadn’t seen each other in the last five years, and the last time we had seen each other, I wasn’t the nicest person. The year before I got sent to St. Agatha’s, Kam had been away on some sort of business, and by the time I had heard he was back in town, I was gone. The three summers I returned home he hadn’t stopped by either.
“He hasn’t changed much,” I thought aloud as I began to unzip my suitcase. “You have,” came a voice from my bedroom doorway, “come down to the kitchen once you change. I’m cooking dinner, you’re probably hungry from your drive,” he said as he promptly turned and walked off before I could reply. “Well then,” I said to myself as I pulled out my favorite shorts and t-shirt from the bag.
After changing, I started out of my room and began making my way downstairs as I told myself, “I need to figure out how long he is supposed to be here for and also control my face around him,” thinking about how I looked like a tomato when I talked to him earlier. Making my way to through the house, I found Kam in the kitchen where he said he would be. “What are you making?” I asked, sitting at the bar. “I was thinking spaghetti,” he said turning around to face me. “That sounds amazing!” I exclaimed before I could stop myself. Kam’s eyes went big from shock and a second later his face contorted in the most beautiful smile I had ever laid my eyes on, “well okay then,” he said laughing. “Sorry, I just haven’t had spaghetti in a while,” I said sheepishly, feeling my face go red once again.
“It’s cool,” he said turning around to face the oven again, “it’s been awhile since I’ve seen anyone that excited for food.” Smirking at the back of his head, “you clearly don’t know me very well,” I said nonchalantly. “No, I don’t,” he said glancing over his shoulder. “What has it been, five years, since we’ve seen each other?” “Something like that I said,” continuing to watch his progress. “Like I said earlier, B, you’ve changed a lot, you don’t even look the same anymore,” he said once again glancing back at me. “I should hope not,” I said matter-of-factly, “I’m not a child anymore, Kam,” I said aloud while in my head secretly hoping he realized this too, in more ways than one.
Kameron turned around and leaned against the counter, crossing his arms he looked me up and down and meeting my eyes, “believe me, I know.” With that he turned back around and continued cooking. I sat there dumb founded for what seemed like an eternity before I came to my senses and asked if he needed help. “No, B. Go chill until this is ready,” he said not turning around.
Walking out of the kitchen I remembered that my best friend, Lara Devreux, was coming by later. Turning around I went to inform Kam. “Oh hey, by the way Lara is coming by in a little while, you remember her, right?” I asked. “Yeah, your little friend who you were inseparable with?” he asked. “Yup that’s the one. Anyways, I told her she could spend the night here. I hope that’s okay,” I said, even though, again, this was my house. “That’s fine, Blake. I’m not here to control your life, just to make sure you don’t do anything dumb. Tell her to come now and she can eat with us, this will be done in about an hour,” he said not turning around. “K, cool,” I said turning to leave, “and thanks Kam.” I pulled out my phone as I made my way to my room, ignoring the fact that I hadn’t got the information I wanted out of him, I texted Lara, “Bitch, get your ass here now. You will not believe who the fuck is at my house.”
