A Ray of hope
Chapter 1
The first streaks of sunlight filtered through the curtains, but for Nandini, the morning felt heavy. Today wasn’t exciting—it was terrifying. She was leaving her hometown. Leaving her heaven.
She looked around one last time. Lucknow’s green fields, wildflowers, streams, and the familiar waterfall that once revived her hope after everything collapsed in her past. This city had healed her. Her friends—Aditya, Tani, Navya, Arjun—and her sister, Anushka, her everything—they were all she had. Now she had to trade it for bustling Mumbai.
The phrase “survival of the fittest” always haunted her. She had fought for survival before. And now? She wasn’t ready to leave the people and the peace she had fought to hold close.
“Nandu!”
Her thoughts shattered as Anushka walked in, smiling far too brightly for her taste.
“Di!” Nandini shot up, frowning. “How are you so chill? I’m dying here! You’re seriously pretending not to care? I know you. I know you don’t want me leaving either. Drop the fake encouragement—this façade isn’t fooling me! Say it loud that you’ll miss me too—”
Before she could finish, Anushka pressed a hand against her mouth.
“God, Nandu,” Anushka sighed, rolling her eyes. “Are you always this dramatic in the morning? Stop overusing that overactive imagination. If it keeps running like this, I’ll need earplugs just to survive this house.”
Nandini glared, pulling her sister’s hand off. “Not funny.”
“Well, good. Because here’s the big reveal.” Anushka smiled smugly, folding her arms. “I’m moving with you. Mumbai’s good for my business. Plus, I’ll enroll in the MBA program at your college. More knowledge, better connections. Win-win.”
Nandini froze. “...What?”
“Yes, you heard me.”
That was it. Nandini shrieked loud enough to wake the neighbors and launched herself at her sister, hugging her so tightly Anushka almost stumbled.
“Di, you are the best in the world! The best!”
Anushka laughed, hugging her back. But Nandini’s joy paused mid-laugh. Her eyes dimmed. “What about my friends? They’re all leaving for different colleges…”
Anushka’s smirk widened. “Oh, didn’t I mention? I talked to their parents. With the gang’s help, they’re coming to Mumbai too.”
“What?!” Nandini blinked, stunned.
“Hm.” Anushka chuckled softly. “Took me hours to convince them. But it worked.”
“You… you have no idea, Di. You’ve given me life twice over. First when you fought through our past with me. And now—this.” Nandini hugged her again, planting a messy kiss on her cheek. She snatched her phone, messaged their group: No one can tear us apart. Mumbai, here we come!
Two days later, six best friends boarded the plane together, grinning like fools.
For them, family didn’t come from blood. It came from wounds stitched together, pain shared, laughter louder than grief.
And they were ready to make Mumbai their new battlefield, together.
