"I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It had been sitting on my Reading List for a while and I'm glad I picked it up. It tells the story of Carol, a nurse from a high born family who has trained under Florence Nightingale and decides to follow her to a campaign hospital in Turkey during the Crimean War. This decision is not looked upon favourably by her family, who cut ties with her, and neither by her fiancé, who forces her to choose between himself and her work as a nurse. The story then follows Carol's life in Turkey and how she overcomes her difficulties to become the assistant to one of the doctors who works at the hospital. There are also a few other surprises, but I won't spoil them. :) It's a nice little book, very easy to read and although it could improve even more with some editing, I still enjoyed it very much and think it's great for those who, like me, enjoy this period in History and want to know a little more about the work of Florence Nightingale and her nurses."
