My name is Madeline (Maddy) Matthews and I am 18 years old. This year has been the most interesting year of my life (so far). Today I have an interview for Harvard so I’m VERY excited. But first I’m gonna tell you how I got here... let’s start at the start, shall we?

The first day of school. Well the last year of school. I’m gonna miss this place at the end of the year (lol nope.)

Anyway, since it is the first day of the last year, I want to make a great impression, by wearing somewhat decent clothing (even though I do love my sweatpants). Who knows, maybe Britney (more like Bratney) Sanchez and her group of wannabes won’t bother me anymore. Thankfully, for most of my life I’ve had my best friend Sawyer Jones for basically my whole life, who is driving me to school. He’s a few months older than me, but I can get my license soon. We’ve known each other since we were tiny, little babies and we’ve been best friends since then. Most of memories have him in it, I literally can’t imagine life without him. Everyone thought we were endgame. Then I hear Jones’ car pulling in and I quickly get dressed.

In the end I choose blue jeans and a white sweater. I mean, simply less is more. I pass my mum who is brewing tea, and kiss her on the cheek.

“I’m going with Sawyer. I love you, bye!”

Mum just gives a small, pained smile and nods. I look down and walk out. It’s like I hardly see and talk to her nowadays. Ever since Sapphire died...

I see Sawyer’s familiar light brown, wavy, soft cloud hair and his hazel, smiling eyes. He grins at me and gets out of his Toyota Convertible we high five each other, then he gives me a big hug.

“Hey Mads,” he whispers into my hair. Sawyer is much taller than me.

“Hey Soy Bean,” I say, enclosed in his hug. When we were younger, I used to call him Soy Soy because, well I was a child.

And then, we just stand there while he holds me. Wait... that’s does not sound right.

“Ummm, you can let go now,” I mumble, turning a bit pink. WAIT AM I BLUSHING?! No, THIS CAN’T BE!

“Oops, sorry,” he says, backing away and holding his hands up in surrender. I swear I see his cheeks tinge pink. I must be imagining things though, we promised each other we’d stay friends forever, although I am a bit worried. On the first day of high school when we were small and young, we made a pact to go to Prom with each other if we are both single by then. So, I have to find someone to go with or I’m stuck with my best friend, and if I go my best friend everyone will think we are dating WHICH I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want. Oh god, I am overthinking this.

“Um, Mads are you good? You zoned out for a bit,” Sawyer says, raising an eyebrow at me.

“Yeah, I’m fine. So...shall we go?”

We sit awkwardly in the car as he drives. I did not expect this to happen on the first day, or ever. But I’ve got SO MUCH thoughts in my brain.

“So...how was your holidays,” I ask as I turn towards him, deciding to break the ice.

“It was pretty good,” he says, looking ahead of him.

My hair flies in the wind and I can feel the cool breeze on me. I love how calming this is.

“I missed you Madeline,” Sawyer suddenly says, turning to smile at me. I look at him in surprise as we reach school.

“I missed you too.”

We get out and I see my FAVOURITE place in the whole world (notice the sarcasm) and I immediately see people I know. Basically, the whole place is dominated with people in my year. Since we are in the last year we basically own the school. Great opportunity for Julia, since she “ruled” basically all our year the past few years. Correction, humans with no brains decided to come to her beck and call. It’s sad how cliche it is. Her group brainwashes everyone. Thankfully, Sawyer and I are 2 of the only people who have common sense. Or so I thought...

I walk and see Julia, her wannabes and 'the jocks' or 'the popular guys', or however you wanna call them. She looks towards me and Sawyer and... smiles? I look at Sawyer, and he is smiling too. My eyes narrow in confusion, but we keep walking.

"You're more quiet than usual," I comment.

"So are you," Sawyers retorts.

"No you are."

"Says you."

I reach into my pocket and pull out my most prized possession.

My UNO reverse card.

"Damn, you got me there Matthews," he says, while smiling.

I poke my tongue out like a child. Yes, I am childish.

"You know, you're so immature."

"I know, it's my defining personality trait," I say as I flick back my auburn hair, making him laugh.

"You're the best," he whispers in my ear and ruffles my hair.

I jump back into a defence position.

"How dare you touch me," I say giving Sawyer a challenging look.

"I dare," he says then chases me. I poke my tongue at him as he chases me around in circles. But, since I have 0 fitness I get slower and he puts his arms around me and starts tickling me. THE PAINNNN.

"Gotcha."

"SAWYER. St..St..STOPPP," I whine.

I cannot tolerate tickles at all. My weakness. He laughs and stops. I loosen up in his arms, which are tight around me. Wait. What.

"Let me go."

"No."

"PLEASE."

"No."

"You guys might wanna get your timetables and go to class instead of having a love fest," a sarcastic voice I hate suddenly says.

Sawyer lets me go and we both turn around. And of course, Ashton Martino is there.

Jerk? Check

Cliche "Bad Boy" name? Check

The "Bad Boy" of the school? Check

And the most annoying human in the whole universe? Check

"Like you would know about going to class," I retort, narrowing my eyes at him. He looks the exact same as last year. Same olive skin, same hazel eyes, same good looks. Such a same his personality isn't as good as his looks.

He smirks.

"You've got a sharp tongue Matthews. And believe me, that's not an attractive look."

"Martino, just shut up. What do you want?" Sawyer cuts in, looking furious.

Ashton looks him straight in the eye and smirks, then walks off, leaving me with my mouth open.

"What's his problem!" I grumble. He hasn't changed at all.

"I dunno, let's just go to class," Sawyers says and links arms with me. We look at each other and smile.

"Let's rule this year."
