The start of it all

I stood alone in a vast, mist-shrouded void of absolute blackness, clad only in the dark blue pajama pants I had worn to bed. Cold sweat drenched my black curls and slim torso, tracing icy rivulets down my spine. My heart hammered violently against my ribs, and each breath tore from my lungs in ragged, desperate gasps.

From every direction the deafening cacophony of total war assaulted me: the metallic clash of swords, the crackling hiss of magic spells slicing through the air, thunderous explosions that shook the ground beneath my feet, and blood-curdling screams that rose and fell like the wails of the eternally damned. I spun frantically in place, terror clawing at my chest as I strained to pierce the suffocating darkness.

A sickly-sweet citrus scent pierced the chaos, cloying and unnatural, like rotting fruit left to fester in an open grave. Then her voice echoed from behind me, disembodied and fractured with raw desperation. “Fabien… help me! Fabien, please!”

I whirled around. The mist parted just enough to reveal her shrouded figure in a flowing white nightgown, her long blonde hair whipping wildly as if caught in an unseen storm. Her face remained hidden in shadow, yet her outstretched hand trembled with unmistakable fear.

“Fabien, save me!” she cried again, her plea slicing through the din like a blade through flesh.

“I’m coming!” I shouted, lunging toward her.

I ran with every ounce of strength I possessed, legs pumping furiously, yet she remained forever out of reach, receding into the black as though the void itself conspired against me. Her screams grew louder, more frantic, twisting together with the rising roar of battle until they became one endless howl of agony. A blinding flash of lightning tore across the sky, revealing that I was no longer in the void but sprinting down one of the academy’s long, familiar hallways. Classroom doors lined the right side; tall windows on the left overlooked the once-majestic courtyard.

Now the courtyard lay in utter ruin. Burned and mangled corpses of students and teachers sprawled across the scorched earth like broken dolls discarded by some cruel child. Trees and flowering plants had been reduced to flaming skeletons or blackened husks, their remains still crackling with residual magic. Deep craters, still smoking from devastating magical blasts, scarred the ground like open wounds that would never heal. The air reeked of charred flesh and ozone. I ignored the horror, forcing myself forward. I had to reach her.

From the shadows behind her, something monstrous emerged.

A naked, hairless figure stepped into view, its skin pale and translucent, so thin that pulsing organs were visible beneath, writhing like living things trapped in a sack of wet parchment. Veins glowed with an unnatural electric-blue light, radiating outward from a heart that throbbed like a dying star about to collapse into oblivion. Bolts of crackling electricity slithered across its limbs and torso, leaving trails of scorched flesh in their wake. Its eyes were empty voids, shining with the same eerie glow, devoid of pupils or any trace of humanity.

As its face came fully into the light, icy dread seized me. The creature was me, a grotesque, twisted mirror of myself, every feature warped into something profane and unholy.

It grinned, revealing rows of pure white teeth that sparked and crackled with raw power. With deliberate slowness it moved behind her, one hand clamping brutally over her mouth while the other groped her breast possessively, fingers digging into soft flesh with cruel hunger. She thrashed violently against its iron grip, muffled screams escaping between its fingers in wet, desperate bursts.

The creature’s laughter rolled out, deep, resonant, and charged with crackling energy. “You can’t save her,” it hissed, its voice echoing with malevolent amusement that scraped against my soul like rusted metal. “She’s going to die screaming. And then, brother… I will kill you.”

With that it yanked her backward into the swallowing darkness, her final scream cutting off as if severed by a blade.

“No!” I screamed, bolting upright in bed, chest heaving.

Sweat poured down my face and back in thick, clammy sheets. My heart slammed against my ribs so hard I thought it might crack bone. My hands shook uncontrollably, and a cold, metallic taste coated my tongue. The nightmare clung to me like a second skin, flooding my mind with images of charred corpses and that monstrous version of myself laughing as it dragged her away. Nausea twisted in my gut, sharp and unrelenting, while a deep, hollow dread settled in my chest, making every breath feel like I was inhaling shards of glass. My muscles ached as if I had actually been running for my life, and my legs felt weak, barely able to support me even while sitting.

My roommate Jason, who had been leaning over to wake me, stumbled backward with a startled yell. He clutched his chest, breathing hard.

I stared at him, still gasping, my bare upper body and damp curls slick with sweat. I closed my eyes and drew in a slow, shaky breath, trying to anchor myself in reality.

“Sorry,” I muttered, rubbing my face with both hands. “Bad dream.”

Jason stepped closer, his expression shifting from shock to concern. “The same one again? With the girl?”

“Yeah.” I exhaled heavily. “Why do I keep having it? You don’t think it’s some kind of sign? Or a vision?”

He frowned thoughtfully, then his face suddenly brightened with excitement. “Wait, maybe your linked school of magic is divination. You know, the one with prophecies and visions?”

I looked at him uncertainly. “I don’t know… maybe.” I stood up, still in my pajama pants, and ran a hand through my sweat-soaked hair. Then I shrugged, the familiar weight of reality settling over me. “Doesn’t matter anyway. It’s illegal for us to even learn about magic, let alone use it. What time is it?”

Jason checked his phone. “Six fourteen.”

“Damn. No time for a morning run.” I headed toward the bathroom. “Let me grab a quick shower and get dressed. I’ll meet you at the school.”

“Alright,” he said, turning to leave. At the door he paused and glanced back. “You should talk to Minerva about those dreams. She might be able to make sense of them, or at least tell you if divination is your linked school.”

I smirked and shook my head. “No thanks. I’d rather not know. Besides, Minerva could get into serious trouble for saying anything. You know how it is, magic is off-limits for us serfs. What’s the point?”

“Aren’t you even a little curious?” he pressed.

I pulled my uniform down from the closet door and glanced over at him. “Nope.”

“Whatever.” He grinned. “Don’t rush too much. They’re holding the welcoming ceremony for the new freshmen today.”

“Oh, right.” I closed my eyes and tilted my head toward the ceiling. “Please, if any gods are listening, let this year go smoothly. Give me the strength not to lose my temper with one of these entitled brats.”

Jason laughed. “With your temper? You’ll be yelling at someone by second period. Not even the gods can save you from yourself.”

I shot him a glare. “Shut up. I’m working on it, asshole.”

He chuckled as he stepped out. “Liar,” he called over his shoulder before closing the door.
