The Yule Ball

Hi, I’m Kai. I am 18 and my father is Dylan Russel the Alpha of the East River pack in Southern Texas. Today is August 12, 2019, and tonight is the Yule Ball. The Yule Ball takes place in hopes to help young wolves find their mate. Hopefully, I’ll find mine.

An Hour Later...

When I got to the party there were so many people, so I just found an empty chair at one of the tables. I was getting hungry so I made my way over to the food. Just as I began to bite into one of the colorful pastries that were on the table, I smelled it.

Sandalwood with citrus notes, the smell of fresh earth and grass after it rains. I could feel my body stiffen as the scent battered me. While my mind screamed and my heart raced, I could feel myself taking deep breaths of this intoxicating smell, my heart already knew what was happening but the rest of my body couldn’t comprehend it. I could feel Kylee (My wolf) losing her mind, pacing and panting, urging me to find out where this smell was coming from. I mustered what strength I could, but the most I could force myself to do is stand and face the crowd of people that seemed to be in their own world. I watched as everyone fell silent when someone made their way to me.

Alpha Micheal Peterson made his way through the crowd of terrified bystanders. Each face in the crowd looked on at me in absolute horror, as if they were preparing themselves to witness my death.

I looked at the rumored Alpha Micheal as he came to stop mere five feet in front of me. I could finally see where all of the rumors had come from. While I stood a whopping 5′4, Alpha Micheal had to be well over 6′ tall. Not only did he tower over me in height, but the frame of his body was enormous, with hands as big as my entire face. I resisted a shutter as I thought about how easily he could crush me, ending my complicated life. Taking a deep breath I looked up, into the face of my mate.

While the rumors described him as this vile monster, he looked anything but. His dark hair was longer on the top but shaved short on the sides. Tattoo’s made their way up to his neck and down his forearms. He wasn’t wearing a typical suit like all the other guys. He wore a deep blue button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and a pair of black slacks. I found myself staring at his face incredulously. A sharp yet chiseled jawline, framed by full eyebrows, lips, and a set of light blue eyes. I tried to read the look on his face as he stared at me. His face seemed cold, expressionless, distant.

“You are mine, little mate.” His deep voice announced, growing deeper with each word.

“I am everything but little, not so much.” I could tell he didn’t take sarcasm very well.

I watched as Alpha Micheal closed the distance between me and him. He came to a stop a foot in front of me and looked down on me. It was then that I noticed the two men who followed him all the way over to me. They looked nothing like what I expected the Blood Moon pack to look like. On all accounts, they were attractive men, but they had the energy to set your hair on end.

I felt my eyes scanning their way up to his muscular body until my eyes met his own. In a motion that looked so graceful and smooth, Alpha Micheal took a step away from me and let his emotionless eyes roam my face. I couldn’t help but wonder how someone so large could move so smoothly. I didn’t dare take my eyes away from his own as I watched his gaze fun over every detail of my face. Excruciatingly slow, he let his eyes travel down my neck and onto the rest of my body. His eyes nor his face ever once conveyed any emotion.

I felt as though I was on display as if he were looking for the perfect cattle to slaughter.

“What is your name?” Alpha Micheal said in his deep voice. The lack of emotion in his voice just fueled my fear.

Being an Alpha’s child I was taught to not show any emotion and I know he was taught the same thing so I answered him and showed him the same lack of emotion he showed me so he knew who he was talking to. “Kai Russel”.

“Kai, an Alphas daughter ” Alpha Micheal said, “Very nice, do you know who I am?” his deep voice asked.

“Yes I do,” I told him calmly.

“Good, now follow me.” He told me, his tone leaving no room for argument. Taking a deep breath I followed him. I noticed quickly that he drastically slowed his pace so I could catch up to him. We made our way through the shell-shocked crowd to an extra-long table that I somehow missed before. Alpha Micheal sat down in one of the empty seats “Sit down .” he said in his deep voice. As I sat down I couldn’t help but wonder, Did he want someone else? Was he disappointed? Did he have someone else? That single thought sent my wolf into a jealous rage. The words “little mate” ran through my head and I couldn’t help but feel somewhat possessive over them.

“We will be traveling to my territory tomorrow morning. I will pick you up at your house at noon” Alpha Micheal spoke to me, his voice yet again void of any emotion. Weirdly his deep voice was calming to me. He was talking to the pack members that came with him when a woman sat across the table from me.

“You must be my brother’s mate, Hi I’m Alexis,” she told me. “Yes I am, I’m Kai Russel,” I said back to you.

“Nice to meet you, Kai”

“Nice to meet you too.”

A couple of hours later...

“Is he always like this, so cold and distant?” I asked her.

“To new people, yes, but don’t worry when he gets to know you he softens up a bit,” she said back to me.

When everyone started to leave we headed to his car. “Remember Noon, don’t be late,” he says to me while we get in the car. “Never have been late don’t plan on being late now,” I tell him with a smile on my face.
